The welder part of me
Is in pain. the Autobody part of me knows it’ll be fine and nobody will ever know + a long lasting repair

I'm a wiring technician and a car nut. I've built wiring harnesses for cars, commercial aircraft, MRI's, Cyclotrons and everything in between. I've learned more about body work from you than I've learned in the last 50 years. Thank you for the great videos and lessons.

You said something in one of your replies here that I absolutely agree with. It's about what the metal needs, not what somebody else says it should be. I learned for myself that you don't really win when you try to fight your way through a weld. But, if you're paying attention to what's going on, and you're willing to adapt, you'll get through just fine.

I recently helped my roommate repair his smokers burn barrel because the bottom had completly rusted out, welding in the new bottom on top of the old one I had to learn this same technique and I thought of you Billy! Just like you welding old rusty cars and it worked like a charm

I have been a professional welder for 30 years plus now and this guy is spot on with the way he welds this out. Perfect!

I just went out in my back yard and tried this on my Multi Handler 200. I was having trouble blowing thru some really thin pipes I was welding to angle iron. I fiddled with the voltage until it said 80A, stuck it way out, and it worked WAY better.

I've welded for years myself...and I've repaired rusty thin metal of various thickness. I've tried different techniques with rods, wire and tungsten. Doing a stop and go, allowing the metal to cool for a sec before laying another seemed to work best, also running downhill in some cases rather than uphill is also an easy way to lay your first pass without burning through. A friend of mine would always say, you can rush the welder, but you can't rush the welding process...😎

The only thing i do different is sand the spot welds down before welding the rest. Helps make sure you fill all the little holes.

Despite all the haters and the negative comments, im going to try this on my 49 cracked rusty fenders! What's to lose? Thanks!

I found making sure the flux core is very dry helps for a better result too. I put the welding wire in the oven on very low 60°C for a couple of hours, any hotter and the plastic reel will melt.

Discovered this technique by accident a few years back when doing a similar job on car panels. I also discovered that if you run some f.core wire down the seem as well it will help to fill some big holes.

I’ve been welding rusty patches exactly like this for 14 years . Same method exactly. It does hold up. welding on cars is way different than other projects. I’ve seen it last 10 years others less but it does work. Never looks great. My biggest pet peeve not looking clean. But it’s damn near impossible on some areas.
