Blackmagic Pocket Cinema 4k: Major Design Flaw vs GH5s

The Blackmagic pocket cinema 4k camera has a major design flaw. Announced at nab 2018, it looks like the best video camera ever for the price. Similar to the Panasonic GH5s for half the price, but it has a big problem. It's a bad camera to film yourself with.

Blackmagic is a cinema camera, not a vlogging camera. You won't see a Red Epic with tilty-outty screen, neither will you see one on any cinema camera. This is an entry level cinema camera for someone "graduating" out of slr/mirroless system who will eventually upgrade to a pro cinema camera.

This is a camera to learn color grading, shooting in RAW, how to build a true cinema camera rig with external monitors and such. It's a film school student camera. It's not designed to film yourself with. It's designed to make movies with.

Marketing is only marketing. In the real life pocket 4k is a mini cinema camera, it haven't a good autofocus, it haven't a good automatic continuos exposure, it can't be used for vlogging! This is sure thing, blackmagic can also say that donkeys fly, but the facts are what matters. And the facts say also that 4k raw or prores are not codec for vlogger

Two things: According to the spec on Blackmagic website the camera shoots in ProRes (editing friendly codec) but you can choose the quality and can go down in quality to e.g. 4K ProRes at 100MBps meaning the video quality is in the same size as like a GH5 or a Sony a7s so where they use compressed mp4 / mov / h264 / XAVC that is hard to edit BlackMagic uses ProRes in the same size and much easier to edit. So that is a dream.

Also the guy from black magic said that you film in cinema LOG, can view with 3 different preview LUTs on the screen while filming and if you want to vlog / not color grade you can apply these LUTs in the camera to the footage and get finished footage like you would on a consumer camera. ... that is awesome flexibility.

But yes, battery life of only 1h, no stabilisation and no flip out screen make this more a cinematic & documentary almost ENG type of camera.

I pretty much agree. The Panasonic Lumix G85 and Sony X3000 combo still represents one of the best values out there for vlogging. Unfortunately, you'll just have to wait a bit longer for something better. On the bright side, you don't have to spend any more money on camera equipment until then. By the way, I recently got a Sony a7 III and used it for a wedding shoot for the first time yesterday, and it was a GAME CHANGER. I got some of the best photos of my life yesterday with that and the 85mm f/1.8 (and versatile kit lens). However, it doesn't have a fully-articulated screen, so when it comes to vlogging, this super-capable camera (with which you would pretty much not have to worry about manually focusing anymore) is pushed off its throne by those cameras that do (such as the high-end Panasonic m4/3 cameras. Also, concerning the very high end Lumix cameras, I find that 60 fps is SO MUCH better than 24 fps when there is any major movement, including panning, but that is still quite rare in cameras. By the way, this was a particularly funny video. Thumbs up.

I don’t know anything about cameras, but I still enjoy watching these videos. My daughter knows more about cameras, so I recommend this channel to her. She’s studying for finals in college, but soon she can watch more of these as she might be tired of me sending her various vegan videos.
