Somebody I know in fla, brought their fainting goats into the house for a hurricane. Most were fine atop the kitchen counters..but there were a few fainting tumbleedowns as the water rose and thunder clapped!! Yea.. he got flooded and worse. But his darlings all survived!! 😊 their daddy was right there!

I'm so glad you didn't try to scare him. Intentionally making them faint is abuse.

Everyone is wondering why the title says that and it’s just because that’s that nickname for the breed ❤️

*So do the goats feel pain when they ‘faint’ like this?*

We know already that they don’t lose consciousness and so they are aware of it happening. But does it hurt them? The answer is not an easy yes or no. It is of course far less convenient when the goats involved can’t communicate this information to us directly. However from their behaviour it seems that it does not seem to bother them too much. And they don’t seem too distressed by the event. Most goats will just stand up and keep on doing whatever they were doing like nothing even happened. It would be a different matter however if the goats were to seize up whilst on top of something, and fell off in a way that hurt themselves, or if they fell onto something sharp and cut themselves.

The ‘Fainting Goats’ are actually goats with a genetic anomaly (called myotonia congenita) that affects their skeletal muscles such that when they are scared, or they panic - they seize up and can fall over. They remain conscious but rigid for several seconds before they are able to move again. The genetic mutation generally doesn’t cause any other effects and the goats can live a normal, healthy lifespan.

If you knew a critter had a nervous condition that turned them into a stone. Why would you do it to them? Startle on purpose? That’s just cruel.
