Logic 101 (#3): Finding Simple Sentences

preview_player
Показать описание

Simple sentences are statements without any logical operations (like and, or, if-then, or not) and are either true or false but not both. This lecture shows how to find simple sentences within larger sentences. Identifying simple sentences will become easier as we learn to identify specific logical operators.

Your video is a hidden gem! Sorry I only discover it 6 years later. Great work William!

Check back in a couple of videos. The short answer is that if "I run" and "I don't run" were both simple sentences, we could represent one as P and the other as Q. Yet, "I don't run" is the version of "I run" that switches its truth value. (When "I run" is true, "I don't run" is false, and vice versa.) So the cleaner way to represent "I don't run" is with ~P.

Once this course ends, I might edit the overview lecture and add a section on predicate logic. (It is important for game theory.) But that's a long way down the road.

Yes I'm here because my high school teachers skipped it saying that it's gonna be in the uni, but now my uni teachers say that it was in the high school so they're skipping it

A simple sentence is a sentence without any logical connectivities and is a STATEMENT, which is not emphasised in the video. If based only on absence of logical connectivities criteria, questions and commands will also qualify for being a simple sentences. Am I wrong?

Hi William, what material should I refer to for dong exercises on logic?

You could stick with Q instead, but that would be like using y to represent the negative version of x in algebra instead of just using -x-. This would be valid but unnecessarily complicated.

William, great video mate.

I'm curious as to what lead you to remove the I 'do' have concern for my health. I understand that it's negated through language, though for the sake of the logical subjects it's important they are not revoked.

Right? :)

Hey WP, I was wondering if you would like to do some videos regarding predicate logic down the road.

In example 6 after reviewing ex 7 I noticed that you use Eat in-n-out as one simple sentences. I was wondering why only three. wouldn't that make the third simple sentence not a simple sentence because you could nether eat in and out at the same time unless you do either one or the other, making it 4 simple sentences. that case, the sentence must say I eat in or out. I understood that why you came to the understanding of why, being that in eating in and out as being careless of ones health and I see that it was translated as that object, other then what was stated. if I where to be wrong, being hyper-critical as my friend below please correct my logic and my opinion as to how you derived from the understand object of eating in-n-out. or could it be that what is eaten is in-n-out and an understanding of food prepped by others.

In example # 7, I see your logic as to why you would could reason that there are 3 separate simple sentences for the 'if' part of the sentence structure  because there are 3 separate subjects in the sentence, however couldn't I argue that since the sentence  "If Jim, Julia, and Jack are tired, then it is night" is actually just 2 simple sentences because as follows: (NOW BARE WITH ME)  the sentence only said "IF" Jim, Julia and Jack "ARE" tired . meaning only if all 3 of them, at the same time (simaltaniously) are tired then it can be night. In other words. If only Jim was tired but Julia and jack weren't would it not be night. So,  if my reasoning holds true wouldn't it then only be 2 simple sentences, or am I missing something?

I understand this but I dont understand why its necessary to remove negations

Why was example 5 a simple sentence? I thought it was an opinion and opinions aren't true or false...

I did one a while ago with the Series 1 finale. Search "game theory sherlock" to find it.

Hi, I'm very very new to Game Theory, and ever since I have been watching and reading the modern Sherlock Holmes series I have got very interested. I was wondering if you could make a video on the very basics (if you already have one great) that would set me on the right path to following your videos. Thank you very much for making these videos.

I think that if lack of logic were a crime, this video would be the...sentence. 😎
