I know landscaping and let me tell you, not only will all that become immediately dull from rocks (which are everywhere in the ground), it's angle and sharpness will make it too dangerous to work with even for an experienced crew. Plus it will suck picking up leaves and get more often stuck in thicker roots like tree roots. What you should do is from an horizontal angle attack with a thrust motion using a pointed shovel for thick grass removal or use a metal rake with a 90 degree angle assuming it's soft soil. Now I can't recommend a multi prong metal rake enough for leaves because it avoids grass tearing, rock grabbing and root snatching significantly more than anything else besides the typical giant plastic rake.
