I have a character thats just become a running cameo in every campaign so now we go on entire crusades to try and find him.

The classy way to do this would be to either have the past PC either be a mentor figure or just appear in the background and not be plot relevant

I did something like this for one of my player's characters. His old character came in and saved his new character from some vampires immediately after being turned (he wanted a vampiric character and this is the opening).

I’ve yet to add a previous PC since this is the first campaign in my current world, but I’ll admit I usually have a leveled npc hanging with the party to provide hints, lore, quests, etc. My main rule is the “DMPC” can never steal plot or glory from the PCs, either betraying the party, getting damseled, or doing the “I’ll hold back these goons, you guys go fight the boss.”

As a DM, I have absolutely included my previous characters in my campaigns before. Most of them are unfortunate bystanders who die horribly. x'D
