💕 Norwegian Lyrics 💕

Herr Zinklar drog over salten Hav,
Til Norrig hans Cours monne stande;
Blant Guldbrands Klipper han fant sin Grav,
der vanked så blodig en Pande.

Herr Zinklar drog over Bølgen blaa
For Svenske Penge at stride;
Hielpe dig Gud du visselig maa
I Gresset for Nordmanden bide.

Maanen skinner om Natten bleg,
De Vover saa sagtelig trille:
En Havfrue op av Vandet steeg
Hun spaaede Herr Zinklar ilde.

Erklærede sig for en Fiende;
Ham fulgte fiorten hundrede Mand

Dalens sønner i skjiul ei krøb
Det måtte Hr. Zinklar sande.

Soldaten er ude paa Kongens Tog,
Vi maae selv Landet forsvare;
Forbandet være det Niddings Drog,
Som nu sit Blod vil spare!

De Bønder av Vaage, Lessøe og Lom,
Med skarpe Øxer paa Nakke
I Bredebøigd til sammen kom,
Med Skotten vilde de snakke.

Tæt under Lide der løber en Stie,
Som man monne Kringen kalde,
Laugen skynder sig der forbi,
I den skal Fienderne falde.

Riflen hænger ei meer paa Væg,
Hist sigter graahærdede Skytte,
Nøkken opløfter sit vaade Skiæg,
Og venter med Længsel sit Bytte.

Det første Skud Hr. Zinklar gialdt,
Han brøled og opgav sin Aande;
Hver Skotte raabte, da Obersten faldt:
Gud frie os af denne Vaande!

Frem Bønder! Frem I Norske Mænd!
Slaa ned, slaa ned for Fode!
Da ønsked sig Skotten hjem igien,
Han var ei ret lystig til Mode.

Med døde Kroppe blev Kringen strøed,
De Ravne fik nok at æde;

ENGLISH LYRICS

Mr. Sinclair travelled over salty sea
To Norway his course was to stop;
Among Guldbrand's cliffs he found his grave
There awaited such a bloody forehead.

Mr. Sinclair travelled over blue waves
For Swedish money to earn;
"God help you, you certainly must
Traverse the land of Norwegians."

The moon shines in the pale night,
The waves roll so softly:
A mermaid rose from the water,
She predicted misfortune for Mr.Sinclair.

"Turn around, turn around, you Scottish man!
It concerns your very life;
If you go to Norway - I'm speaking the truth -
You'll never come back!"

Lying is your song, you poisonous troll!
You always foretell misfortune,
If I catch you one day at my mercy
I'll cut you to pieces!"

He sailed for days, he sailed for three,
With all of his hired men,
The fourth morning he caught sight of Norway,
I won't make a mystery of it.

By the coasts of Romsdal he went ashore
Declared himself an enemy;
After him followed fourteen hundred men,
Who all had evil intentions.

They defiled and burned wherever they went,
They violated all the people's rights,
The old man's pleas didn't bother them,
They mocked the crying widow.

The beacon beamed and the messenger ran,
From village to nearest village,
The sons of the valleys did not crawl into hiding
This truth Mr.Sinclair had to face.

"The army is out on campaign with the king,
We have to defend this country ourselves;
Cursed be the cowardous villain,
Whose blood he should now guard!"

The farmers of Vaage, Lesjø and Lom,
With sharp axes on their necks,
In Bredebøigd they met up,
They wanted a word with the Scotsman.

Tightly between the hillsiders, there goes a path
Which is called Kringen,
The band hurries over it,
There the enemy shall perish.

The rifle is taken down from the wall,
The grey-haired shooter aims for far away,
Nøkken lifts his wet beard,
And longingly awaits his prey.

The first shot hit Mr.Sinclair,
He roared and lost his breath;
Every Scott cried out, when the colonel died:
"God free us from this agony!"

"Forward, peasants! Forward, you Norwegian men!
Strike down, strike down without care!"
In that moment the Scott wished he was home again,
He wasn't in a very cheerful mood.

Kringen became decked by dead bodies,
The ravens got enough to eat;
The young blood that flowed from there
The Scottish girls mourned.

Not a single living soul made it home,
Who could tell his fellow countryman,
How dangerous it is to visit those
Who live amongst Norway's mountains.

Still a monument stands on that very place
Where the enemies of Norway threaten.
Woe to each Norwegian, who doesn't pay attention,
When he lays his eyes upon it!

For anyone interested: This song is about a Scottish Officer in a group of mercenary Scots that were hired by Sweden during the Kalmar War, they were supposed to be stationed in southern Sweden, and marched through Gudbrandsdalen, Norway. Where they were attacked by farmers and had to retreat, Sinclair and All prisoners was killed in this battle as a warning to not invade or march armies through Norway.

Wow! I had no idea that Norway and Scotland had history together. I have Scottish paternal GrandFather and Scandanavian blood through a Viking named Rollo through my Father. I am a Black Woman from Jamaica and an avid amateur Genealogist and I love learning about History through Music so thanks so much for sharing.

Can you please also do the Gaelic song "Fear a' Bhàta." There are many variations of it, but my favorite is "The Fields of Ard Skellig" from The Witcher 3 (video game). However, "The Fields of Ard Skellig" has more music than vocals, and I would love to hear the lyrics in a beautiful and clear tone.
Thanks a bunch!

I’m guessing whoever typed up the lyrics in the description is a native German speaker, as all the nouns are capitalized. Unless that was a trait of an older version of Norwegian, you only capitalize at beginning of sentence, people names, cities, and countries. As a native English speaker who studied German before Norwegian, this has been a weird language hangup for me.

When singers will stop confuse folk ballads and opera, I may grow to be a happy man... Otherwise perfect... 🤔
