Impressive underwater shots of various sea turtles in 8K [Ultra HD]

Sea turtles (Cheloniidae) represent a family within the turtles in the narrower sense. The group of sea turtles includes a total of six or seven species that share a number of common characteristics. Their extremities are modified into large paddles, from which only one or two claws protrude, and their carapace is noticeably flattened and streamlined.

Because the dorsal shell does not fully ossify even in older turtles, the ends of the ribs protrude freely. Some regressions are also noticeable in the abdominal armor. Due to the change in shell, sea turtles have also lost the ability to retract their relatively large heads when threatened. The salt glands, which constantly release a concentrated salt solution and thus regulate the salt content of the blood, represent an adaptation to the salt water. The kidneys alone are not able to do this.

Sea turtles inhabit all tropical and subtropical sea areas and spend their entire life in the water except for laying their eggs. The first sea turtles probably evolved from terrestrial turtles about 200 million years ago.

Sea turtles feed on cephalopods, crabs, sponges and jellyfish, which they hunt on their long dives, as well as plants. Some species change their diet over time, becoming pure herbivores with age. Their metabolism is greatly reduced when diving, and the blood is enriched with CO2 without harming the animals. As reptiles, they are lung breathers and after some time – around 5 to 40 minutes when active, 4 to 7 hours asleep – they have to surface to exchange the CO2-containing air for fresh air.
