I bought this BMAX B1 Plus Mini PC from Amazon - so it only seemed fitting that I also buy an SSD for $10 and install that too.

You could just extend the c partition onto the second disk. I think windows supports that itself / no extra software.
It's not just the ssd (even a good one will be slow... Abet faster than yours). Its the chipset of the motherboard. The usb ports are the fastest thing on that system.

The fast portion of the eMMC transfer is due to a buffer, It doesn't start out writing to the disk. When the buffer is full it will then direct write, that's why the speed drops off part way through. The system might not assign any RAM to the SSD bus combined with the cheap SSD not having any onboard buffer either, so it isn't the drive that is slower, but rather that it isn't using any buffer.

Thanks I’ll give that a try once it arrives

which brand is the SSD? I have seen many messages about incompatible SSDs

These micro PC's have a reputation for having every slow SSD controllers. You'll probably find an external drive hanging off a USB3 port to be faster.

Just installed a 512gb ssd (kingchuxing from ebay for about 30 bucks, i think) on my b1 and it seems faster. One thing I did different in the bios was to disable the emmc, which made the new disk boot option 1, then i re-enabled the emmc as boot option 2. the new drive showed up as the c drive when i rebooted. it was about 15 seconds faster to reboot with the new drive. But, I also noticed that as the system stays on, it seems to reboot a little faster each time. I'm going to let things settle out a bit before i go and erase the emmc (or maybe I'll just keep it as an instant restore if things go south with the new drive)

What kind M.2 SSD does it use SATA or NVME?

Is there a size limit to how large the m.2 add-on drive can be?

I recommend if cloning, find any free linux distro that boots from a USB, and use the DD command to easily clone. Easier to do than any cloning software. (just be careful not to type the disks in the wrong order and copy the blank to the original.. )

Why do you need to install an app? Once you out in the ssd card do you have to install the app

I would disable the C drive and install Linux on the SSD then you can have both.

Windows refuses to believe I have a memory stick in mine. Did you go into BIOS and have to change anything?

It's strange. It says a type 2280 SSD and yet the slot is a NVME SSD. It don't make any sense.

I think a dell optiplex micro or one of its competitors from lenovo and hp is better than this and is more reliable. I got a brand new optiplex 7050 i7 for $250 brand new.
