Maqamat are a series of melodic patterns or modes used in both composition and improvisation of Arabic music. Each Maqam is associated with specific feelings or emotions. This series is meant to introduce the concept of Maqams and how they change the sound and the mood of Arabic music from one song to the next. Each week we will take a look at a different Maqam and listen to it played within a Taqsim or song, as we progress we will also talk about how each Maqam differs and how you can tell them apart. We hope this series inspires you to dig deeper into the intricate world of Arabic music!

Examples of songs in Nahawand Maqam:

Layalina by Warda

Alf Leyla wa Leyla by Om Kalthoum

Muhammed Hjri is a musician from Yemen who is currently based in Cairo, Egypt. He is a performer and teacher and also works with Oud makers in Cairo to create custom professional level Ouds for musicians around the world.

Thank you so so much! Very interesting. The depth of sounds is fascinating. This gives the tone of the melody a special velvety hue on all strings and octaves. It caresses the ear and softens the mind and thoughts.
