NOTES (not done with AI lol)
*step one: braindump/brain vomit document*
_step one a:_ braindump everything you can think of about your story in bullet (dot) points. think about characters, the plot, the premise; just everything you can think of, even if you know it won't go into the story.
_step one b:_ go to the top of your doc and write down some information about your story like the project name (you can come up with a cute project name to make it more fun), genre, vibes/themes you want to include, your estimated word count (length), and a short summary or basic premise. try to keep the premise fewer than five sentences.
_step one c:_ organize your document so that it's easier to continually update throughout the writing process. for example, you can separate it into sections for characters, scenes, settings, the magic system, and quotes. this allows you to keep the messiness of brainstorming while keeping your ideas for different story elements separated.

*step two: place-plot*
list possible places/settings where things can happen, and see where your imagination and the story take you from there. since your characters need to be moving in your world and the story needs to happen somewhere, this can be really helpful for visualizing your story and connecting different events as well as coming up with new ones. think about what can happen in a certain place, like how it could be connected to another plot point, or how the character(s) react to where they are.

*step three: zero draft*
your zero draft is your story told to yourself using short sentences. to begin, make a new Google Doc (or any document) and make a table with two columns titled "chapter number" (or name) and "draft". write what happens in each chapter or scene with bullet points and use short sentences to just get the story and ideas down on the page. you can focus more on action and dialogue here rather than internal monologue. just think about telling the story to yourself and making it easier to write the first and subsequent drafts later.

*step four: the first draft*
you're now ready to write the real first draft! create a new document and split-screen it with the zero draft or have the zero draft nearby, like on a tablet for example. then start writing the story using your zero draft and other notes and brainstorming as guides. the first draft is where you can make more fun, creative decisions and really let your description and characters' voices shine.

Thank you so much for this video, Ana! It is really helpful and kind of erased a lot of my doubt and fear of starting something. I'm inspired/motivated to write now! I love your videos on how you plot/outline so a suggestion I have is to make more videos on how you plot and outline? Like the way you "pantser-plot" your zero draft or maybe you could try place-plotting a small story as an example of how it can be used? Idk but I think it'd be cool. Anyway, thank you for the amazing videos you make and I hope you take care of yourself! It's hard for me to take care of myself a lot of the time but I've been working on it. :)

I just turned 20- I'm going to write my book this decade. This is something I've always wanted to do, but never had the structure or idea of how to start it. Thank you so much for this advice. I am going to continuously reference back this video in my process!

the whole 0 draft thing is SUCH a good idea

For draft zero, I would recommend adding another column. It's "why" because in books every chapter has a meaning or reason to be there. It doesn't have to be a plot twist, but something like establishing characters.

imo this is the perfect way to explain how to organise chaotic thinking without taking away how chaotic it is. i am not good at being SUPER organised and planning out everything meticulously, but this explained how to do exactly what i’ve been wanting using the way my brain works, and i don’t even think it was on purpose. you’ve given me a lot of motivation and hope and i look forward to finally writing a novel as i’ve been trying to do for over 7 years now

I’m an 13 year old, and I have always been gifted in English, and have always wanted to take it more seriously and write an actual short stories/book but, I’ve always got overwhelmed when it came to the planing and knowing what and where to write everything. I searched “how to write a book” and this video came up, I can officially say I’ve started my first draft for my book idea.
Thank you for making this video!!!

Love this guide! I would love to see a longer video of you explaining how you “Pantser plot” your zero draft! Or maybe just a Vlog where you do an example bullet point plot! I always think up cool story ideas but then get stuck with brainstorming the plot and how to make the storyline progress in a natural way.
Thanks for all your awesome writing videos they help me so much! :)
