I read Moneyball and am excited to read this book as well. He definitely takes complex, riveting events, turns them into thrill rides, and explains in a way that non experts can understand without being talked down to. I definitely felt like a movie was playing in my head when I read Moneyball. I am sure I will experience the same impressions when I read The Premonition. Thanks for this in-depth review!

Yeah! I agree with you, Michael Lewis makes the stories about the people, it’s captivating... right now I’m reading THE BIG SHORT.

Last year I read THE UNDOING PROJECT, I enjoyed it so much!

Great review! I will read THE PREMONITION too.
Thanks for sharing!

After I watched Moneyball I read the Micheal Lewis's book of the same title. As a retired Medical Laboratory Technologist who worked analyzing blood samples in clinical chemistry at Columbia Presbyterian Medical Center during the HIV and Hepatitis C epidemics I felt compelled to read "The Premonition". Every healthcare worker should read this book because although the COVID infections are abating now for those who have been immunized with Pfizer, Moderna and other vaccines the next virus may arrive in the near future.

Thank you for this review. As a frontline worker, this pandemic is still too raw and I still feel too let down by ::gestures at everything:: to be able to deal with this right now. But I will explore it down the road.

If you like Michael Lewis (& I do, I do), you will also appreciate anything written by Tracy Kidder

We had a pandemic response team that Trump got rid of, but before we had that pandemic response team we had a pandemic prevention system called the "U.S. Public Health Service" that Ronald Reagan got rid of. The U.S. Public Health Service was shown in action in a movie called "Panic in the Streets" with Richard Widmark when the movie was made in 1950. In the movie Widmark plays a Public Health Service officer who realizes some criminal is infected with pneumonic plague and will cause an widespread epidemic if his is not found together with all his contacts in order to stop the budding "pandemic." But Ronald Reagan got rid of the U.S. Public Health Service. We are an insane society repeating the same mistakes over and over again. Eventually when they get rid of the CDC and any other pandemic prevention plans that we might now have we'll have another pandemic and have to do it all over again. America, the land of the stupid and the home of the ignorant.

Thank you for this review! I had no idea Michael Lewis had a new book coming out. I really need to read The Big Short (LOVE the movie) because even if it's quite US-specific, the ramifications of that financial crisis were felt everywhere, and even the movie itself made me interested in understanding financial systems better (not my area at all). I also own Moneyball for similar reasons. I don't think I'll reach for this one yet, but it's always great to hear your thoughts.

Excellent review, Olive. My spouse has been sort of connected to the government response and we are both eager for our copy to wing its way from our library.

Thank you for your review. I have not read this book. I'm simply in awe to how many books this guy has written.

Sounds interesting going to add it to my tbr. I would recommend reading The Great Influenza by John M. Barry if you haven't read it yet. I read it in the start of the pandemic and it was mind blowing to see sooo many moments that happened during the Spanish flu was happening now with covid 19. In the book the author even brought up how there was going to be another pandemic coming and America needs to be prepared.

Superb review, Olive. Now I have an idea of what to expect when I dive into this book. The author was on MSNBC today with Nicolle Wallace. He said himself, as you said, that the politics was only a small part of the story. But I guess he probably doesn't get control over what the marketers do to sell books!

We had a pandemic response team and plan but trump got rid of it. Wouldn’t you know it: we ended up needing it.

It was confusing watching it from outside. Never been so glad I was/am in a country that responded well. Might have to check this out.

The feeling I got when watching what was happening across the border was like when a neighbours house is on fire, and all you can do is stand there and watch. I think this is still too soon for me to read about, but will look for it in the future maybe.

It’s funny, I’ve read tons of pandemic fiction over the past year but NF I’m just not ready for yet. Defiantly adding it to the list though.
