Coll de Dama De Ciutat Fig - Tasting A Rare Fig
Показать описание
The Coll de Dama de Ciutat fig is a lesser-known fig. This fig bears the same family name as the "Col de Dame" varieties, but the spelling is different, and here is the story why:
"Col de Dame" translates to "lady's collar" in French, which makes sense because most of the Col de Dame figs (Col de Dame Noir, Col de Dame Blanc, Col de Dame Grise, etc.) are French figs. However, I've heard the Coll de Dama de Ciutat fig is of Spanish origin from the city of Palma on the island of Mallora. The native language in Palma, Mallorca, Spain, is Catalan, and they referred to Palma simply as "the City." "Coll de Dama de Ciutat"in Catalan translates to "Lady's neck from the City" where, the "City" in this case is Palma - so "Lady's neck from Palma, Mallorca!"
And that is why the spelling is different!
This fig does not match the color that I've seen in Montserrat Pons' book, but this fig is not ripened in its native, dry Mediterranean climate, the tree is very young and does not have fig wasp pollination. I expect the figs to "change" as the tree matures. It is also possible this fig is mislabeled, because this looks nothing like the other "Col de Dame" varieties. There is no long neck, which I show in the video compared to CdD Noir and CdD Blanc. It is entirely possible I have the wrong fig, so time will tell.
