Coll de Dama De Ciutat Fig - Tasting A Rare Fig

The Coll de Dama de Ciutat fig is a lesser-known fig. This fig bears the same family name as the "Col de Dame" varieties, but the spelling is different, and here is the story why:

"Col de Dame" translates to "lady's collar" in French, which makes sense because most of the Col de Dame figs (Col de Dame Noir, Col de Dame Blanc, Col de Dame Grise, etc.) are French figs. However, I've heard the Coll de Dama de Ciutat fig is of Spanish origin from the city of Palma on the island of Mallora. The native language in Palma, Mallorca, Spain, is Catalan, and they referred to Palma simply as "the City." "Coll de Dama de Ciutat"in Catalan translates to "Lady's neck from the City" where, the "City" in this case is Palma - so "Lady's neck from Palma, Mallorca!"

And that is why the spelling is different!

This fig does not match the color that I've seen in Montserrat Pons' book, but this fig is not ripened in its native, dry Mediterranean climate, the tree is very young and does not have fig wasp pollination. I expect the figs to "change" as the tree matures. It is also possible this fig is mislabeled, because this looks nothing like the other "Col de Dame" varieties. There is no long neck, which I show in the video compared to CdD Noir and CdD Blanc. It is entirely possible I have the wrong fig, so time will tell.

Are you growing any lesser-known or rare figs that most haven't heard of or tried? Let me know!

I just noticed you had a review of this variety. Have you had more CdDC figs since? The reason I ask is because I also have this one and it looks very different from yours both interior and exterior wise. Mine is that deep berry flavor, typical long neck of Col de Dames as well. I wish I could post a pic. I did send a CdDC I made from my tree to a collector in Florida though and to my surprise her figs ended up looking similar to yours with more of an amber like interior! The difference is like night and day. This is a head scratcher for me. I understand differences caused by differing location, climates, cultural practices etc, but this is a really dramatic difference.

Anyway wondering if you had any more CdDC figs since you made this video to compare your 1st one to it?

Quick linguist blurb PSA:
Coll de Dama de Ciutat (Ciutat is pronounced "sioux-tahT") the "ci" part of "Ciutat" is pronounced as in "city". "de Ciutat" literally means "of [the] city".

I noticed that there are hardly any leaves on the first tree in the video. Did they fall off or do u pluck them off?

That's not CDDC mislabelled, CDDC is dark red inside with a normal CDD neck.
