The MRG-B5000, the pinnacle of the full-metal ORIGIN line, is undoubtedly one of the turning points in the 40-year history of G-SHOCK. The MRG-B5000R is the latest incarnation using both the Durasoft strap and the early “black-gold” DW-5000C-1B model as its design inspiration. Plus this new watch’s COBARION-made bezel’s intentionally toned down gold color maintains its casual feel. Introduced in 1983 with the first-generation G-SHOCK, the shock-resistant structure standard into the MRG-B5000 series is stealthily inside the MRG-B5000R as well.

Hodinkee Japan Editor-in-Chief Yu Sekiguchi interviewed Hirofumi Kurino, a founding member of UNITED ARROWS and currently senior advisor to the company in charge of creative direction, about the new MRG-B5000R. Mr. Kurino, familiar with the G-SHOCK brand since the 1990s when it took over Japanese pop culture, shared his impressions of this watch, how it incorporates advanced features in an iconic shape and his thoughts on the G-SHOCK brand itself.
