Are cruise ship horns getting too loud?

@floridamandrone This short drone video shows the cruise ship Nieuw Statendam blowing her extremely loud horn. Steam can be seen billowing from the horn and the powerful sound shakes the drone violently.

No there not they are built to be loud including when there in fog that’s inportant to be loud so other ships can hear them in very long distances like over mile or so

If you close your eyes and listen to the echos coming back, you'll notice it's stronger from certain directions where buildings, mountains, etc. reflect it. An excellent way to observe how RADAR works. If another ship is coming towards you at see, sometimes you can actually hear their Doppler shift up just slightly due to relative speed differences.

About 5 months ago I went on a cruise ship for the first time. I got to my room on the 11th floor and about 30-45 minutes later I went to the front of the cruise ship… so I got there and waited for the ship to leave and little did I know… I was right by the horn

I was on a Royal Caribbean ship… (the Liberty of the Seas)

I waited for about 10-20 minutes for the ship to start moving and about 5 minutes after the ship started moving… you know what… the thing scared the the living sh*t out of me and literally put limits at my my ear drums… But seriously… I would recommend to not stand by the horn that blows your ears.

Horns are used, when a captain gets impatient with pier runners. When docked in Iceland, we were about 20 minutes late leaving, because of late passengers who were still shopping in the terminal. He blew the horn 3 times. Each time a few more passengers exited the terminal. We wound up leaving a few passengers behind.
