In this video Dunken Francis sensei takes us through the mechanics behind the classical Aikido "two-handed grab" exercise, morotedori kokyu ho. He explains how this exercise has changed over the years and how the throw really isn't the important part of the movement. Essential viewing especially for newcomers to the art.

Love this exercise! We still do the "old" way with the jodan start.

A good example of how often "conflict" is only a state of mind.

Can't emphasise the hip movement enough. Bottom half of body for power, top half for direction. Very good demo.

Such a tricky one this - I might try it holding a bokken as it seems to me that's where this came from?

I know the Iwama Aikido purists out there will be comparing this to Saito sensei - thats fine - I watched him do this a number of ways! This video is an attempt to explain to beginner's the MECHANICS that make this function, so hopefully they can then apply those principles elsewhere.

In your last through you vocally exhale. I've seen this alot with various techniques and jo. I seem to remember that there is a short exhale/vocalisation as opposed to this longer one. I wonder if by exhaling you are maximising the down effect from relaxed muscles in you chest? Any explanation would be most helpful.

I feel like the spoken explanation is way too long... visual demonstration with minimal talking has always done a lot more for me.
I can try to remember all those verbal details, but my understanding is only completed by the motions themselves.

When would a real attacker grab your wrist? Never! He would punch you in the face.
