It was in a PSA 7.5 and it was Cert # 46751783. I think it was an investor cross over, to bring publicity to CSG. Michael Rubin, Jay Z, and lots of others were part of the Blackstone CCG purchase. To answer your other question, Andy Broome is the lead vintage grader for CSG. Well, he is now the president of CSG. Andy Broome was the lead vintage grader at BVG at Beckett before he went to CSG. Beckett distinguishes between Type 1 and Type 2. Andy Broome just uses all of Beckett's notation and processes from his previous company. Notice how BVG and SCG both use the same crimped sleeves to put T206, 1933 Goudey, and small cards like early Bowman into the CSG slabs?

I collected cards from 1957-63. I kept my cards and my mom did not throw them away. I decided to start collecting again in 1978 when I was 29. I went to my first card show then in Chicago. Saw a dealer who had about a dozen '52 Mantle's. They were in the $30 to $125 range. I picked one out for $40. Many, many years later, I sent it in to be graded. It came back a 3. I should have bought the highest priced one as it may have been a 7-9! I acquired 5 more later on ranging, from 4 to 7, but not for forty bucks.

I have a 53 Topps Mantle SGC 1...which is my favourite card, and it's stayed stagnant in all of this. I agree that long term Mantle cards will be worth much more.

New subscriber! Seen you in some COG live chats and meant to sub and forgot. I think any “investor” or vintage collector- worth there weight, is going to buy the card and not the grade for a card like this. They probably also did the research and knew it was a psa 7.5 before. Therefore I don’t believe CSG will come in off the top rope and show they have value for the investment side of the business. To me they will be a BVG type, that you can buy and use to cross, to save money. Also, I wouldn’t be shocked if CSG, paid the seller some amount to do this cross and get the publicity. Thanks for the content!

I'd bet it was in a lower grade and cracked out. Minor touch up for a higher grade which is very common. Backyard breaks have videos of them shopping for lower grade high-end cards and talking about how they can touch them up and resubmit them for higher grades= more money

Mays > Mantle and it’s not even close.

Love your videos.

I ended up trading for a 52 Mantle when I was like 14-15 years old - it was a beat card but it was a Mantle rookie... Good times - the card looked like it had been though a washing machine but it was totally authentic (and it would have graded such)....

And look, I'm trying to play a game where I trade up cards - you know - something for something else like that kid did with a paper clip, lol (I don't know how he traded a paper clip and got a house but, But look I have a huge box of baseball cards (and more than enough hockey cards), so if anyone wants to play that "trade game" I'm all game (no pun of course).... Look, I just don't know what card to start with.... I have so many nice cards - it's amazing.... How about a 1975 Topps Fisk??? I'd give it an 8.... 75's are so tough to grade ....

Look, I'm not messing around I would love to trade with other collectors and see if I could perhaps trade up to another Mantle RC,

You are assuming it was in a psa slab, it could have been a bccg, Gma or some other odd ball company and been a higher grade .I’m 50 years old and used psa and Beckett for the 20 years last year I made the switch to csg.they are already in the big four .they will eventually come close to psa prices.the older guys that have all there stuff graded through psa are always going to say psa is the best because there money is tied up there.

It is purely pref for me, I like SGC for my vintage cards. Especially my Mantle collection, it just looks better and the value is right there with PSA for the most part. In fact I have done really well with pre-80's cards and SGC compared to dealing with PSA.

Enjoyed another video by JWH. I'm not to fluent on the grading companies nor on graded cards. I understand their place in the market place though. This Mantle in any condition would be on most serious collectors want list. I'll have to settle on my non graded reprint. Thanks for sharing the content.

I think that if I was in that position, I might do the same thing. Certainly hind-sight says it was worth the shot to re-holder for a better grade. I think you pose legitimate questions. As always, great video.

Hey, the difference between the type 1 and type 2 is the Look, I dont think anyone cares but some backs are darker and some liter It's 50/50 Look, it's like the 55's (If I remember correctly) - you have the light back and the dark back -- same thing....

There is some speculation that this Mantle was a bit of a publicity stunt from CSG. Just the fact that someone would grade a card like this with CSG is a huge coup (and red flag). Then getting that bid price over $1 million is the second. Both could have been orchestrated to give CSG a boost?

I haven't compared values, but I have compared grading standards. Deviation Sportscards has done so, as well.

CSG is a tough grader but, I only buy CSG if the value of the card is less than $300.

The "finest known example" 1952 Mickey Mantle was in an SGC holder, not PSA

With regards to the Mantle rc, how did 52 Topps end up in the ocean 10 years later with Topps approval?

I'm somewhat a conspiracy theorist and think it was all an inside job to pump CSG. They've really been pushing ads about their highest graded/priced cards before the Mantle sold. A 1/1 Julio Rodriguez for $15k+. The average guy isn't gonna be able tell a difference between a 7.5 and an 8. My guess is CSG bought it themselves to crossover in their slab just to give it a .5 higher grade. Wouldn't surprise me if someone from CSG bought it either. Now they can claim they've sold some big time cards to try to make it look like they're on a rise. All that said, I personally haven't seen their slabs but have heard good things about them. I'm not opposed to using them.

Yall thinking something shady with a 0.5 upgrade? Fail
You can crack out psa 9s and get 10s back sometimes...yikes
