Emily i have one question for you, maybe you can help me. I need info how louad need to be kick, snare, clap, hihats, perc, 808 bass or synth bass, and synths in a mix in db or rms. I got info from one producer that kick need to be -17 rms, snare or clap -32 rms, hihat -38 rms synth -40rms do you agree with this or can you reply with right level. Its trap drums. Thnx in advance

Thanks Emily! I'll stay out of any discussion about who's right. I'm always trying to learn, and will try anything once, maybe even twice, except skydiving without a parachute.

-18 is REALLY low for transient heavy sources (like drums). The whole -18 thing comes from that being equal to 0dB VU, but that doesn't take into account that VU meters are super slow. If you have a vocal and a snare drum both hitting around 0 on the VU meter of a console, the vocal might be hanging around -18 in your DAW, but the snare would probably be clipping! Where -18 actually becomes an issue is if you throw a compressor on your snare track and have the threshold cranked and still can't get the amount of compression you want. If you record at a higher level, like -8 or something (the exact number TOTALLY doesn't matter), you won't run into any issues.

But a mix collapsing in on itself is so much more fun!🤣 In Harrison Mixbus32C we even have an old-fashioned trim knob on the console. I tend to work as you do for the rough-in and then use the trim knob for fine changes during the mix once EQs and compression are in play. Keep up the great content.
