ABOUT U.S. ROUTE 50
U.S. Route 50 (US 50) is a transcontinental highway in the United States, stretching from West Sacramento, California, in the west to Ocean City, Maryland, on the east coast. The Nevada portion crosses the center of the state and was named "The Loneliest Road in America" by Life magazine in July 1986. The name was intended as a pejorative, but Nevada officials seized it as a marketing slogan. The name originates from large desolate areas traversed by the route, with few or no signs of civilization. The highway crosses several large desert valleys separated by numerous mountain ranges towering over the valley floors, in what is known as the Basin and Range province of the Great Basin.

US 50 has a diverse route through the state, traversing the resort communities of Lake Tahoe, the state capital in Carson City, historical sites such as Fort Churchill State Historic Park, petroglyphs, alpine forests, desert valleys, ghost towns, and Great Basin National Park.

The route was constructed over a historic corridor, initially used for the Pony Express and Central Overland Route and later for the Lincoln Highway. Before the formation of the U.S. Highway System, most of US 50 in Nevada was designated State Route 2. The routing east of Ely has changed significantly from the original plans. The route change resulted from a rivalry between Nevada and Utah over which transcontinental route was better to serve California-bound traffic, the Lincoln Highway or the Victory Highway.

US 50 crosses the central portion of Nevada, entering the west side of the state near Lake Tahoe and exiting the east side near Great Basin National Park. The route crosses mostly desolate terrain in its journey across the state; US 50 passes through several large desert valleys and basins. The highway crosses 17 named mountain passes that break up the Nevada desert. To crest some of the passes along US 50 requires navigating steep 8% grades and hairpin turns through pine forests to reach elevations of over 7,000 feet (2,100 m).

In the stretch of highway between Fallon and Delta, Utah, a span of 409 miles (658 km), there are three small towns: Austin, Eureka, and Ely. This span is roughly the same distance as Boston, Massachusetts, to Baltimore, Maryland, or Paris, France, to Zürich, Switzerland. Traffic along US 50 varies greatly. The average annual daily traffic in 2007 ranged from 52,000 vehicles per day in Carson City, to 530 vehicles per day near the Duckwater turnoff.

Shoot, rode my 1993 Electro glide Classic From Reno to Alaska, 3100 miles one way. I used to think 50 was long and lonely but you get up to the ALCAN and that segment alone is 1400 miles of wilderness, with wolves, moose and bears crossing the road.

Great to see the Loneliest Road again. You guys are doing a fantastic job. Me and my buddy are both retired Police Sergeants from New Zealand and back in 2013 we overnighted in Tahoe and then rode down into Carson City to do Highway 50. We stopped off at the Harley dealership and they were setting up for a memorial ride for MIA's and POW's. There were four State Troopers all Sergeants in full dress on their bikes to lead the ride so we walked over and introduced ourselves. On finding out who we were they really made us feel welcome and asked us to ride with them up the front. Sadly we had to decline as we were on a tight schedule. I told them we were going out on Highway 50. I asked what the speed limit was out there and they said they don't ticket you unless you go over 80. Then the lead Sergeant said "but today you boys can go as fast as you like and we wont look." We did the Loneliest Road at 110mph. What a memory!

Hard to shake hands with America on the loneliest highway when there’s nobody out there!! Jokin!! Brother, this is my kind of riding; hardcore, lock in your mindset, and stay on the throttle! I’m always thinking about that run in the dead of summer heat. Rolling thru a frozen tundra was epic!

Last year, August 2023, I did a ride on my Canam Ryker Rally from Sacramento, CA. US50 across Nevada, through Utah, to Mesa, Colorado. After getting to Fallon, Nevada, at about 5:00ish, I decided to continue riding, being it was still daylight, on to the next town and get a motel room, no such lucky, so I thought I'd try the next town, then the next town, then, then the next, on and on, and on, till I got to Utah at 50--I70, at breaking dawn.
The loneliest road in America is an understatement, I don't think I saw 10 vehicles from Fallon to Scripo, Utah. Riding all night across Nevada into Utah. All of the casinos were operating full blast. There was one curious part's of the ride that really peaked my interest was right on the Nevada Utah border, there was a Phillips 66 gas station in Utah, and with the casino in Nevada all under one roof. ONLY IN AMERICA, DON'T YOU JUST LOVE IT 😂! Hey there there, you TWO LANE LIFERS, yes I know I don't ride a Harley but I do enjoy the wide open road. AMERICA THE BEAUTIFUL from here in South Western Arizona. P.S. last year, I also did Pikes Peak, Mesa, CO, over the Grand Mesa, and the 550 starting at Delta, CO., all of the way south to Bernalillo, New Mexico. Then I-40, back home to Arizona. God bless you guys, and keep up the utubes.

Thanx very much for the ride, Fellas. Beautiful country! I live in Vegas, and I’ll be doing this ride in a couple of months. Vegas to Ely, Ely to Eureka, Eureka to Fallon, Fallon to Tonopah, and finally Tonopah back to Vegas sounds like a good ride.
I appreciate you three for taking us on this ride. That sunset is priceless and what riding is all about in this gorgeous country of ours.

There is another Utube channel by a semi truck driver out of Colorado with the Utube title "Riding Shotgun" and watching his Utube channel 2Lane came up on my cellphone so I've subscribed to both channels. I would say these are two of the best travel programs I've seen. I love this beautiful land, God knew what he was doing when he created the scenic USofA
