A couple around actual packing your backpack:
1. Don't strap your sleeping bag to the outside of your pack. If you need to strap stuff on the outside of your pack, make it stuff that you can live with if gets wet.
2. Don't expect your backpack to be waterproof. Put your critical stuff (sleeping bag, clothes, tent body) in a separate bag inside your pack, or use real dry bags.

Having footwear with a good fit is always a good idea. The shop where I buy my outdoors shoes encourages customers to try and actually walk around in the shop and over a stretch of slightly rough terrain they set up in the shop. They even offer loaded backpacks for that. Taking that offer saved me from buying footwear that did not fit quite right and getting the right pair instead.

One of the biggest or a couple of them, mistakes I have witnessed, more then one time are.
1. Not trying the gear or setting it up before a trip.
2. What do you mean I should of seam sealed the tent before I came on this trip. As the water drips off them and all their gear after a rain.
Mistakes are great teachers.

Being a scout leader, not completely staking out the tent is the biggest mistake I see. Kids stake out the corners of the tent, then throw the rain fly on without staking the vestibules, letting the fly sit right on the mesh of the inner. Then they wonder how water got inside when the fly got covered in dew.

About the shoes: If you can't try them at the store, buy them used. Unless you're talking about trailrunners which doesn't have much durability. I got my hiking shoes used for half the price and the threads looked like someone only used it twice. Make sure they're your size and if they're a big bigger there's no problem, you can adjust them and anyway your feet are going to swell after some days on trail

Good stuff Matty! I just did a few days of gear maintenance myself and have a few more ahead of me.

Most important might not be the boots or shoes but instead are likely the socks. Buy the best quality socks n your feet will be a lot better. Buy Darn Tough’s.

Don't forget to bring an axe, saw shovel, chair, and clean clothing for each day on trail! 😉

Not being familiar with your equipment and how it functions is a mistake I see often. Not understanding the limits of your sleep system for example can lead you to never want to sleep outdoors again. Happy Hiking
