Magnus Carlsen loves challenges! After beating Duda on the final day of the Champions Chess Tour 2022, winning the Finals and also the entire Tour, he came to the interview area. This was when he posed with this study. Magnus just stood there thinking about the various possibilities and cracked it under 3 minutes! Try and see if you too can do that?!

The position is composed by David Gurgenidze and is part of the Chess Artistry Adventure program at Judit Polgar's Global Chess Festival.

Special thanks to Harshil Jhaveri for asking Magnus to solve the position, Ayushi Shah from streaming it LIVE for the ChessBase India viewers and Tejas Dharamsi for recording this.

It's strange to me how magnus stands so far away from the board like it's the middle of someone else's game

nothing like magnus demonstrating his monstrous knowledge along with Anish giving a laugh full interview in the same frame!

Idk why my brain goes for checkmating black king with his own queen and pawns

this is really tough after Qd1 Kg2 Qe2 Kh1 (I would also think it's a perpetual check draw) Carlsen saw much deeper than I did

I think one of the better parts of this is. He doesn't even like solving board puzzles like this. He said he prefers actually playing people through the game. This is his off skill 😅

His last game against sockfish was insane, Magnus is an incredible genius

Can we expect Hans Niemann to do what Magnus just did and play through the continuation of the puzzle solution? The accuracy of Niemann's moves in chess games indicates he should. However, I've never seen him solve difficult puzzles and explain all the alternatives with continuations.

I guess most 2700+ GM's should be able to do what Magnus did once they spot the solution to the puzzle.

I saw the Qc4 option and wrong bishop and assumed it was a draw too, right as Magnus did. Of course in a game I’d have just taken the pawn in about five seconds

I’m just wondering how come Magnus didn’t remember his own world championship game, as he remembers most of his games.

I am confused: I played this with stockfish, and it gives me a different solution, from the "perfect" solution presented here...?

Very amusing seeing the world champ wriggle around like a hyperactive toddler while he's trying to figure it out.

What if the white bishop at G2 just killed the black queen at F1 and not giving a check by white Queen at B2, that should be a good move I guess
