Talking Heads - Life During Wartime LIVE Los Angeles '83
Extrait de " Stop Making Sense " réalisé par Jonathan Demme ( sorti en 1984 ), à partir d'images de concerts des Talking Heads au Hollywood's Pantages Theater, LA, en décembre 1983.
Lyrics
Heard of a van that's loaded with weapons
Packed up and ready to go
Heard of some gravesites, out by the highway
A place where nobody knows
The sound of gunfire, off in the distance
I'm getting used to it now
Lived in a brownstone, lived in a ghetto
I've lived all over this town
This ain't no party, this ain't no disco
This ain't no fooling around
No time for dancing, or lovey-dovey
I ain't got time for that now
Transmit the message to the receiver
Hope for an answer someday
I got three passports, a couple of visas
You don't even know my real name
High on a hillside, the trucks are loading
Everything's ready to roll
I sleep in the daytime, I work in the nighttime
I might not ever get home
This ain't no party, this ain't no disco
This ain't no fooling around
This ain't no Mudd Club, or CBGB
I ain't got time for that now
Heard about Houston? Heard about Detroit?
Heard about Pittsburgh, PA?
You oughta know not to stand by the window
Somebody see you up there
I got some groceries, some peanut butter
To last a couple of days
But I ain't got no speakers, ain't got no headphones
Ain't got no records to play
Why stay in college? Why go to night school?
Gonna be different this time
Can't write a letter, can't send no postcard
I ain't got time for that now
Trouble in transit, got through the roadblock
We blended in with the crowd
We got computers, we're tapping phone lines
I know that that ain't allowed
We dress like students, we dress like housewives
Or in a suit and a tie
I changed my hairstyle, so many times now
I don't know what I look like
You make me shiver, I feel so tender
We make a pretty good team
Don't get exhausted, I'll do some driving
You ought to get you some sleep
Burned all my notebooks, what good are notebooks?
They won't help me survive
My chest is aching, burns like a furnace
The burning keeps me alive

Final comment. Fun facts: The drummer Chris Frantz and bass player Tina Weymouth are a married couple. The band consists of four core members. Byrne, Frantz, Weymouth and Jerry Harrison (white guy on keyboards). All original members. Additional keyboardist (late) Bernie Worrell was also one of the core members of George Clinton's Parliament/Funkadelic. He was one of the main creators of their distinct sound. Backup singer Lynn Mabry is also part of Parliament/Funkadelic and is one of the original Brides of Funkenstein. Take all members of the band that you saw on stage minus David Byrne and add two sisters of bassist Tina Weymouth and you have the Tom Tom Club. They had a hit song "Genius Of Love" back in 1982 and in this particular concert show Byrne takes a break and the rest of the band performs Genius Of Love. The two backup singers Edna Holt and Lynn Mabry perform the parts of Weymouth's sisters who were not present. Had enough info?

I'm a 65 year old black guy from Philly and I've seen them live numerous times starting from the 70's, my brother turned me on to them and I've been down with them ever since. Their live performances and energy is intoxicating.. That's Bernie Worrell from funkadelic on keyboard

Around '84 I was in a small cinema, in the middle of England - watching "Stop Making Sense". By the time this song was on, the WHOLE audience was out of their seats, in the aisles dancing. This is infectious and great fun - must play the whole movie some time! :)

So happy to see you enjoy this. This concert was one of the best things that has ever happened and David Byrne is one of a kind. If you can enjoy the energy here, without analysing or criticising, just soak it up and go with it, you are on the right road. ❤

In the beginning of “Stop Making Sense” Concert DVD he sings “Psycho Killer” and he LOOKS like a psycho killer… then, later in the concert he puts on the Big Suit which is hilarious. This is the best concert DVD I have ever seen and I have seen a hundred. This is all choreographed….he is a singer/performance artist of the highest caliber.

You guys are teasing a 68 year old, life long rock fan I can tell you the Stop Making Sense concert by David Byrne and Talking Heads is one of the best I have ever watched. It is a legendary classic and should be watched from beginning to end. He is one of the last living musical geniuses of my time. Treat yourselves to the whole show.

Talking Heads had such great, such tightly-wound, such paranoid songs. This was one of their best.

Keyboardist Bernie Worrel from the great 80s funk bands Parliament and Funkadelic. Adds the additional funk to Talking Heads live performances

The music is so fun and bouncy, don't forget what they are singing about. living during a war, what you have, your needs, what you care about . its actually pretty heavy.

So glad you guys got into this, been a fan since the 70’s, this whole concert is just a good time, you should do Slippery People from Stop Making Sense, or even the whole concert, I’m sure you’ll love it!

I grew up in a house hold with no music. Don't get me wrong it was great. Just no music. Ever.
I turned 14 and a new family moved in down the street with a stereo. They were city folk and weird as all hell. Changed my life. Thanks Bill& Mimi for moving out to the country with us hicks.

I watched this whole concert and couldn't wipe the smile off my face. I thoroughly enjoyed every minute of it. Fantastic entertainers and musicians.

When they did this show they started it with an empty stage and just David Byrne with an acoustic guitar doing "Psycho Killer" then rolled out the different instruments, one by one, building up the band and the stage as they went

This entire concert is amazing it starts with Byrne alone with an acoustic and with each song a different section of the band is added. RIP Bernie Worell.

Someone at a party tried to offer me some speed, and I said, "No way, man, all I gotta do is watch the Stop Making Sense version of 'Life During Wartime, ' and that'll get my blood flowin'." The guy said, "Whatever, man, " and he walked away, shaking his head, disappearing into his own drug-fueled oblivion...

My biggest concert regret is never seeing Talking Heads live, there is no other band like them.
