What a find job you did interpreting the great poems of Robert Frost! He is one of my favorite poets. I love the straightforward and honest quality of his poems. Poems by other poets that seem to turn me off are poems that are too flowery and sugar coated. 🌛

I agree that "I have been one acquainted" likely indicates the tough times are behind him. I see a painful relationship, suggested by the interrupted cry; a broken relationship, suggested by no call to come back and no good-bye (though he stopped and strained to hear such a call). The struggle and the break brought the lonely night, the wandering, the rain, the saddest city lane. The watchman embodies painful questions, perhaps from others, but surely from himself that he tries to shirk. However, I read that, like a traditional sonnet, there is a resolution in the last two lines: "At an unearthly height", the luminous moon shines light on the tragedy and says to him, "If this were the wrong time then maybe there could have been a right time; but no, there was never a wrong nor right time; this relationship never was to be". The repetition of the first line emphasizes the profound impact this acquaintance with pain and grief has had on him.
