Once again, something just a little different. Join me for a tour of PORTLAND'S CITY OF THE DEAD, the largest mausoleum on the West Coast. With the remains of over 90,000 people resting here (with room for another 40,000 more), it truly is a Necropolis. Complete with resident ghosts and a labyrinth of halls, rooms, nooks, and levels, it is truly a sight to behold. Open to the public just one day a year, on Memorial Day, it's worth a visit.

I might have gone through there in 1991. At the time, I was in cemetery sales, and in the area on vacation. It was amazing, and the columbaria were especially interesting. They held a variety of styles of urns, with a favorite being made to resemble books. That's just what I would chose for myself.

Some of my family rests there. I haven’t visited in years but it is so beautiful. I’d loved to be laid to rest in such a beautiful place.

I've been in Portland almost fifty years and was totally unaware of this place. Now I want to see it. Thank you 🌹

I go there every memorial day with my Dad. I have family there. It truely is a awesome place. We always try to see a new area everytime. Mind blowing. Both grandmothers, my grand dad his sister, and grandmas sister. One grandma is on the top floor overlooking the park, one year a golden eagle flew by. As if those ancestors were saying hello back.

I worked here in the 90s. We all knew what a magical place it was. During morning break we would go to the 8th floor where is the maintenance department had their office and eat the donuts that were delivered fresh. You truly could spend time looking for a specific crypt or niche and not see a person in those long, spooky corridors. You enter the building on the 5th floor, and the other floors are below ground. When we pushed the button for the elevator to come get us from the dungeness wings, it was always very creepy when the elevator door slowly opened to retrieve us.

I went to Llewellyn Grade school right next to the crematorium and intermittently a foul odor would emanate from the crematorium, we would say, " another Grandma up in smoke."

All these folks ashes are there but their spirit is someplace else. If there are spirits there they may feel protected and safe. Interesting subject and place, I am sure the spirits will make sure that no one breaks in. And if they do they will regret it. So, stay safe, warm/cool, and blessings.

I wish I’d known about this sooner, ‘cause now I have to wait until next Memorial Day to go see it. It’s practically within walking distance, and I’ve always had an interest in such things, so I’m surprised I didn’t know about it until now.
