Republican Healthcare Myths Debunked: 'People Come To U.S. For Care!'

While many do come to the U.S. for healthcare, a much larger number of people leave the U.S. for care. Medical tourism takes place to and from many different countries for many different reasons, and the complex reality of the situation is nothing like the crude, one-sided picture that conservatives paint for us. There's also no good evidence to support the claim that the U.S. has the world's best doctors and medical facilities.

Pfft. If Stephan's lump was such an emergency, he would have been given immediate care in Canada. However, it probably wasn't, and he had to wait like all other non-emergency patients. Ofc his well-paid US doctor made him think it was a near-death just-saved-in-time situation, because that doctor wants him to come back the next time he gets a scare.
Cancer sounds so scary to the layman, but it doesn't have to be that dramatic. My husband has lived with skin-cancer for twenty years.

You really do your homework. And though you declare your interest from the start, you handle the evodence very even-handedly. Good job!

Anton "quote, I have a Patreon btw, end quote" Dybal

I joke, I joke. I love the well-researched nature and general meticulousness of your videos (including the way you make it absolutely clear where the quotes are, lol). And my sense of humor is pretty similar to yours. I'm starting to feel like it's in my best interests to donate to your Patreon...

Sometimes waiting can be frustrating and pretty often you have to push to get the care that's needed (unless it's an emergency), I still prefer that instead of the risk to lose the house over hospital bills! (Sweden)

This is how ridiculous the talking point of "Canadians come here for health care" is. If you are a Canadian citizen, it means that you have no health insurance that you have been paying into for years in America. Which in turn means that if you came here instead of waiting in Canada, you'd have to pay full price of your treatment here out of pocket. Check ups in the US are like $200 without insurance, surgery is usually like 10k up to 200k - 300k depending on what surgery you're getting. So, for example, a knee surgery is like 30k - 80k. Republicans want us to believe that Canadians rather fork over thousands of dollars out of pocket than wait 2 months and get the surgery for free in Canada? And if they were doing that, what does it say about how much better their economy is that they can willy-nilly make that choice and basically throw away that much money when they don't have to? I don't know many people in the US that even have 10k in savings. Nobody in Canada comes here for health care, the Republicans sound so dumb when they make this point! There was a story recently about a Canadian woman who went into labor while visiting family in America, she got stuck with a bill for 130k. She couldn't believe how expensive it is here for health care...

Hey, if US health care is such high quality, why is Mr. Libertarian Rand Paul traveling to Toronto to get the best non mesh hernia surgery in the world? Granted he's paying out of pocket, this hospital is largely funded by Canadas single payer fund. Mr. Paul has said in the past that doctors and nurses are slaves under universal health care, so he's hiring slaves to do a surgery on him. The highest quality surgery, in fact...

What about:

- nobel laureates in medicine per capita
- medical school rankings (if you don’t trust that, do this: look at people accepted into both universities, and see which one they go to, adjusted for where they’re coming from.)
- survey doctors for greatest medical innovations of past few decades —> tally by country:

The US *dominates* by these metrics. Which isn’t to say that it’s because of our private insurance system, it could be something else.
