As a beer lover, and history/archaeology buff, this was very interesting. Thank you! I can imagine that homebrewing did indeed happen as a matter of course, just as bread baking. And I can imagine beer being used as a sign appreciation for services rendered between neighbours. Not barter, as barter implies an exchange of values just as trade (and according to Graeber, it cancels the debt), but a reciprocity thing, thank you for helping me with whatever. Just as you would tahnk help given or borrowing tools with like a pie, a cake, a bottle of wine or a case of beer at a later moment so it does not register as payment
