They were never meant to be locks. Just a bit of a failsafe

This is not supposed to be a replacement for actual locks. It's just a method to keep the door from being opened to prevent or delay the unwanted person from entering the house.

My friend had done that when were 12 about 10 years ago. It is just a failsafe if someone attempts to bust in or something.

That one strong kick to open the door goes both ways, kick the door shut on his hands / fingers.
Remember that no lock will keep a person out that wants in. They only slow them down a little.

So apparently those locks are only meant to delay the intruders till you choose your weapon and come at them.

That's not really a lock. A shoulder on the door would also work.
