The Vow

oh, i don't wanna hide
i want some witnesses
to see the thing that i'm about to do
i'm gonna make some promises i cannot keep
but i will be held to, oh my god

i have a habit of getting in over my head
i just can't resist the locks & chains
it bounds me up to something that i can't control
that's bound itself to me and you

oh, i can't see the day after tomorrow
i don't know the future, even still
i don't promise 'cause i know i'll always love you
i make my vow to guarantee i will

there's no amount of dough that i could make or lose
no amount of days that you could live
no sickness and no health until the day we die
that changes what i've said on this day

oh, i can't see the day after tomorrow
i don't know the future, even still
i don't promise 'cause i know i'll always love you
i make my vow to guarantee i will

so let's go all the way, let's mix the money up
let's paint the room and corner ourselves in
i wanna take you out in 50 years from now
and every night till then and we will sing

oh, we can't see the day after tomorrow
we don't know the future, even still
we don't promise 'cause we know we'll always love this
we make our vows to guarantee we will
we make our vows to guarantee we will

Love these acoustic versions with the detailed intros. This one reminds me of David Bazan a bit. Awesome stuff.

'...but there's real power in making commitments in the face of uncertainty. It amplifies the way in which all of our commitments are ultimately underwritten by God's commitment to us." -Derek Webb from the intro. An interesting statement. I'd love to hear people's thoughts on it.

Thank you. Thank you for baring your soul. Thank you for your hate, your love and your honesty.

I normally don't comment, but I think I understand what he's saying... I think basically Derek is saying that every time we make a vow ("commitments in the face of uncertainty"), marriage being the ultimate example, we put on display the fact that although we don't know the future, we know that God does and therefore we can commit in marriage to love no matter what may come our way. God has committed Himself to us, therefore we can makes vows to others. Does that make sense? Thoughts?

I know that.. Death and life are in the power of the tongue, and those who love it will eat its fruits. Proverbs18:21

Whoever guards his mouth preserves his life; he who opens wide his lips comes to ruin.
Proverbs 13:3

Gracious words are like a honeycomb, sweetness to the soul and
health to the body.
