After all these years still bleeding good. I remember listening to these the first time round. I'm that old.

Poor Hugh Paddick...he can barely get the lines out. Absolute gold.

I remember it so well. This was the end of the radio age; TV was already predominant.

Sadly this was the very last Round The Horne. Kenneth Horne died on February 14th 1969, just weeks before the 1969 was due to start recording. Julian and Sandy lived on in Stop Messing About, which replaced RTH, in 1969, but no longer written by Marty Feldman and Barry Took. Strange coincidence that they had J & S married off in this episode.

How they got away with something so utterly camp, and manged to broadcast it, still baffles me. The only clue is that if you listen you can hear people collapsing with laughter. Even if it wasn't officially acknowledged, the vast majority of the audience were in on the 'secret'.

Interesting that this sketch ends before the full, original version as actually broadcast at the end of the series (indeed the end of Round The Horne, but no-one knew that at the time) on 9.6.1968. In the original, Julian states that regarding his displaying his Prospect of Whitby, he was embarrassed not so much for himself, but for his wife. Sandy then explains that they are both married (of course) and the two wives are then introduced: butch sounding Julia and Sandra. I wonder why this fitting end was cut off from this recording here? Sadly of course, Kenneth Horne died in February 1969 and so the new series of Round The Horne was never made.

This is one of the best episodes, but why is the end of it missing? This is supposed to be The Complete Julian and Sandy, yet we don't get to hear the end of this episode. At the end we meet Julian and Sandy's wives, Julia and Sandra. "My name's Julia, and this is my friend Sandra" or something like that.

It was exciting to be a gay then. Dangerous.

This show must have had a huge gay following bsck in the day. Both Kenneth and hugh were gay. They used words from the community.
So it wasn't like just a send up of gays, it was no different than Graham Norton and Alan Carr.
Rude crude and lewd.
I've known so many real life versions of these.
