Why do we like old school opera? (1st Part)

Anna Netrebko in a truly obnoxious production, with a misplaced and fattened voice.. totally contrary to the delicacy and vocal youth of Mimi.
On the other side, the Queen of opera, nothing I can say will do her justice: Maria Callas.

Callas and other singers of the so-called "old school" can wonderfully interpret an aria not only because they have a good voice, but a good vocal technique which allow them to convey emotions with high and low notes, loud or soft voice when they sing.

Callas well coordinated voice, chest and diction and correct darkness with perfect position, not yells. Potrebko = cow yells, diction flying, position bad, no contrasts, only cow yells

I can’t believe anyone can actual hear Netrebko and still hire her. She holds nothing to Callas or literally anyone from the golden age.

I love the comparison, but it would be a lot easier to do Tosca of both, at their similar ages. It is dramatic differ.
Either way to be nasal like this, it is best to retire ASAP if not long ago...

the Russian opera school differs from the world one. There may be strong voices (Muslim Magomaev, Fedor Shalyapin) in Russia, but they absolutely all sing without emotion. All songs are similar to each other. The world school, and especially the Italian and Greek schools, give preference to emotional coloring

Brilliant. Especially as Callas never sang Mimi live and is maybe the most perfect example of a singer retiring prematurely because of having ruined her voice.
