For those saying communism that's not entirely true. Poland was communist but today is probably the most religious country in Europe. The fact is that east Germany was mostly protestant and protestants across Europe and the world are more likely to drop their religious beliefs and become atheists, combined with communism that is what has made East Germany so atheist

I live in Magdeburg in east Germany. My parents were born there in the mid 80s, back when it was still Communist, and my parents never had any religion passed down on them, except that my grandfather's parents were somewhat still religious.

And its really funny how the atheists in Germany are the more conservative.
