I was an infosec consultant for two years. I’d say 90% of the cases we came across resulted from an organization having poor employee training and communication. The hacks were all social engineering/malicious links/information sharing. 10% were downloads / very sophisticated ransomware attacks. These were mostly in the healthcare sector.

I do cyber security, some years ago a VPN would protect you from people seeing what you're doing online. With HTTPS being used so much (the padlock icon in your search tab), it protects you. VPN is primarily for hiding what you do for your ISP and to change your IP location so you don't need it. I have a couple though for those reasons

Information security & consultant background here....and I will tell you, the facts you've stated are solid, and sadly, users will continue to suffer the consequences when they sacrifice security for convenience. That is always the tradeoff. Be safe, stay vigilant, your information only needs to be leaked once
