"That's right, you could get paid a total of around $18,000 for lying in bed, playing games on your phone, reading books, skyping with your friends and family, taking online classes -- and even go on with your day job if you can get away with working remotely, so long as you don't get out of bed for that entire duration." The Young Turks hosts John Iadarola and Ana Kasparian discuss the study, and just how much money it would take for them to participate.

Tell us whether or not you would participate in this study in the comment section below.

$18, 000?! Just lounging around for a couple of months with internet?! Where do I sign up?

I love how John just comes out and declares that he is better than everyone, and everyone else is lazy. You should do this John. Don't worry, you won't be missed.

It's tilted down, meaning your head is the lowest point. You eat lying down, go to the bathroom lying down, and shower lying down every other day. It is NOT for lazy people, they are looking for very healthy people, or "astronaut-like" candidates, so that recovery can be smooth. You WILL lose cardiovascular function, bone density, muscle mass, etc. as that is the main point of the study.

I once spent a whole summer stuck inside my 1 bedroom house without ever going outside my front door. And that was without cable television, video games and no internet, I wasn't sick, injured, depressed, just stayed home, read and watch movies and TV. I wouldn't mind going pro

It’s actually more like $16 an hour if you consider that you’ll sleep seven hours a day. That money includes food and housing costs. Now there may be health costs, but that’s still a decent job for anyone in decent shape without specialized education—that is, most of the healthy people in the United States under 30.

I spent four days in the hospital, drugged, and with an IV bag in my arem, so I could not move around much. I could get to the toilet, barely. It was realy painful. The nurse came in once and asked if I wanted a shower, I said I prefered a walk. She left the room and forgot about me. I was ready to cry. I begged them to let me walk a little.
If you really took this offer, your muscles would atrophy. You would need physical therapy to be able to walk again. Eighteen thousand dollars? No

I think you underestimate how painful it would be to be bedridden for 105 days. You get terrible back pain, muscle pain, depression, and cabin fever. Not to mention your head is sloping down, and feet are upward slightly.

This is pure torture YOU CANNOT LEAVE THE BED FOR 70 DAYS.

This is the complete opposite of being lazy. Being lazy means you lay around do what you want when you want. This is restrained torture and i agree 18k is not enough to convince someone to destroy themselves in this study.

The thing is, you can't get up for anything. Not to shower, not to use the bathroom. I could probably deal with this if I were just confined to a bed, but losing bone density, having my muscles turn to mush and atrophy, and having to use a bed pan are deal breakers.

NASA if you manage to see this, you can maintain health like that, so long as they receive some form of human interaction and limited diet. I have been like "said" thing for years. Remaining seating or laying down for large periods of time. Now my mind is complex and borderline genius, so my mental strength is way above others. I can handle the mental strain, but I do feel it. Having someone to talk to is important.

You mainly want to make sure that "said" person never gets bored.

Heard about this on the radio the other day. It mentioned that after the 90 days NASA will provide free physical therapy to remedy the muscle decay that is guaranteed to happen during the experiment. They'll be making sure the test subjects leave in about the same physical fitness they came in with.

18k before taxes is NOTHING compared to the misery that you'd go through. Not forgetting the health risks... what about blood clots? Bed sores? Etc....

the 18k is just enough to bring those who are qualified and interested in the project. most people are not qualified, they are looking for people who are similar in qualifications to astronauts, not just the general public, or else they would just hire some homeless people. it is enough compensation to keep you up while you recover from it, but it is essentially a donation of your time, because the people who would be qualified could make more money doing normal work in that amount of time.

There are people who are unemployed currently who lay around in their beds already everyday. This would be good for those people.

I've been ill and lying in bed a lot the last couple of days. It gets boring very quickly. Noone should do this.

It's honestly no different than what I do when not in school.
I just sit at my desk, play minecraft, some KSP, and watching youtube videos.

I just had an operation and had to lay in bed for 4 days, and I felt like shit during and after that time. You have no idea how much of a difference there is between lying around all day except for going to the toilet or fridge and not going anywhere at all.
after 70 days you'll need a lot of training to be able to even stand up.

This sounds like it would drive a person insane. Being restricted to lying down for 70 days, I don't know how anyone could go through it mentally even if all their physical needs are taken care of.

I don't think most people could do it. However, people who can lie down play videogames, watch tv/movies/anime/etc., write, and have no problem with not having any real social activity for 3 months... they should do it. I've done it before so I would gladly take it. :)
