Have BMW Finally Fixed The Self-Destructing B58 Oil Filter

Many owners of the B56, 57 & 58-engined BMWs have experienced problems when changing their engine oil insofar as the filter has a tendency to disintegrate when removed. This results in debris being washed down into the engine with potentially catastrophic consequences.
In this video, I take the latest OEM filter from BMW and examine it to see if the design has been improved in any way in order to make it less prone to failure when removed.
Sadly and as you will see from watching the video, this latest incarnation does not appear to improve on earlier versions in any way whatsoever and I would continue to urge extreme caution when both installing and removing the OEM filter during oil changes.
I get the feeling that moving forwards, disintegrating oil filters, filter housings and consequential engine damage is something that we BMW owners are going to have to accept or perhaps purchase something better designed like a Lada or a Trabant perhaps.
Hey ho . . . next oil change will be squeaky bum time I guess

Hello I speak from the states.
I love your admiration for finding a solution to the faulty oil filter issue. BMW recommends 10k service intervals but many know that that’s too long especially for certain driving conditions.
Also, unfortunately we have many drivers that neglect maintenance so reports of crushed filters may be derived from some of those drivers. I change my oil every 3 months and my oil filter has always came out flawless. And I always use genuine parts courtesy of Fcp euro. Cheers

Dropped my car in for a service today, and the garage found this issue with the filter. Thankfully the work to replace it is being claimed through BMW so I haven’t had to pay a penny .. this time.
I’m worried that at it’s next service interval the same issue will occur and I’ll have a big bill to pay to replace the oil housing as BMW might not be as generous the second time around (even though it’s purely a design failure).
A shame to have such a frustrating issue linked to such a good car!

Have you tried the MMR lifetime oil filter for the b58 engine, it is made from stainless steel

Perhaps the MMR stainless steel oil filter can help? Care to do a review of it?

Thanks for sharing the vedios on your findings. I guess it may mean for DIY, you need to change the oil filter earlier than the regular schedule per the iDrive. Hopefully, this means less deteriation when the oil filter is being change over and the bottom piece will not come off, which will be a headach.

Great break down (no pun intended) on the issue. Any updates on your thoughts to remove as safely as possible? I think you said BMW's TSB of 2 turns loosening, 2 turns tightening, and then remove, is too liberal and to do maybe a quarter turn, then a half, etc.. Thanks.
