Works perfectly. If the string is thin and tightened as much as possible, the cut could be made very precise. Also, regular water will do. Ice is not necessary. Tried it. Worked very well. Thanks!

Seems it would be more logical to soak your string in alcohol and then tie it on the bottle. Then there's no need to clean it up and the bottle doesn't have any residue to get heated up and cause extra breakage

So I came here after reading the news, I reckon they had the bottle of acetone near the wine bottle and the whole lot went up , Cheaper to buy a vase next time, But then who doesn't know acetone is extremely flammable

No.  Fill the bottle with cold water at the level you want to cut, add string & alcohol, light = one nice little 'click', and a nice clean cut.

It's kinda like making your own "det cord" - I tried hand sanitizer, pure ethanol, several other alcohol and acetone based gels...
Obviously I tried hairspray and men's body spray...
Finally I got the PERFECT SOLUTION.
I BRAIDED 3 STRINGS OF FINE COTTON TWINE (it's barely a normal thickness after the 3 strands were braided) and then I saturated the cord with, basically, motor oil. I used A&D ointment and Vicks Vapo Rub - because they're both 99.6% petroleum jelly - petrolatum - and they burn long and hot.
I grew up with my father and all the fathers in my class being Vietnam veterans and the results using the petrolatum reminded me of napalm and other such jelly like incendiary substances - if you try my way, be sure you have NO TRACES OF PETROLEUM JELLY ON YOUR PERSON, because it will catch fire quickly and it's not easy to put it out if a gob on your hand catches fire - oil and water don't mix, etc .
I kept a SACK of coarse flour next to me just in case because sand, flour, or anything else that can cover the flames and extinguish it by oxygen deprivation is the same mechanism as fire extinguishers and especially the foam fire suppressant used at airports in case of a dangerous and possibly fiery landing .

I'm trying to tell you that it REALLY REALLY works!

You could also title this video “How To Cut Your Fingers Off.”

Should you want, instead, to keep your fingers, stick the sandpaper to a flat surface, then hold the glass by the uncut end as you rub the cut edges against the sandpaper. That way, your fingers don’t come near the sharp edges.

glad you are only using one turn of the string and not several, this makes it more precise cut but you should make sure the sting is even around the circumference or the cut will be crooked and not straight/level

At least this one mentions the possible dangers. Lousy cut though, and gloves are really pretty essential if you don't want to slice your fingers open.

Dip the string knot in the alcohol, it will soak up into the string. Less messy
