I had a chance to stop by the Yaesu table at Hamcation 2025 and speak to John Kruk about the new Yaesu FTM-510Rasp radio that is being released very soon. This is an upgrade to the FTM-500 radio that incorporates the new Super-DX Technology and ASP (Audio Digital Signal Processor).

Considering my 500 is not even a year old and already replaced, this makes me want another Yaesu less and less

Smile! They took out the bluetooth and charge extra for it. From Yaesu site quote: "The FTM-510DR ASP does not include the built-in Bluetooth unit. By installing the optional Bluetooth unit – BU-5, hands-free operation is available with the SSM-BT20 or a commercially available Bluetooth product."

They should have added SSB capability. That would have made me want to upgrade.

100% agree with no 2M SSB. Big swing and a miss! Hey, Yaesu, in case no one has told you, hams are still active on 2M SSB.

Aloha Jason, thanks for letting me know that I won!
I flew to the disaster zones in Los Angeles and just got back a week ago.
I was glad that I took my new FTM-200DR transceiver that proved to be outstanding for EmComm communications around all those devastation zones that I got to see in person and by air thanks to four LAPD Officers that I use to train years ago.
The FTM-200DR also does APRS and C4FM and some of the EmComm personnel were using instead of PL Tones, they were using DPL Tones.
So on the FTM-200DR, instead of DPL, it has DCS. So for one repeater on PAPA 03, I had my rig set for DCS 073 and it worked perfectly.
I rented a full size SUV and used a Tram 1185 mag mount and was able to use a cigarette lighter plug in that was right behind the front center console to transmit at 5 and 25 watts only, could not transmit at 50 watts unless I used my battery extension connector they sell at most Walmarts for about $10, which I have a bunch that I bought over the years when they were only about $2 each about 10 years ago. I used a 2”x 6” piece of Velcro that I slapped on the radio bracket and pasted next to my right knee in the drivers seat.
The only problem I encountered with this set up was that it was so cold there in LA that I had to wear long pants and it would hit the top of the VFO knob and push it down and made this beeping sound.
The Velcro worked good except the next morning if it got really cold overnight like 37 degrees, I would find my rig laying on the floor board but once I got the climate control back above 60 degrees, the Velcro would work just fine again.
The full size SUV that I rented was a 2024 Kia Sorento with a plastic engine but what I didn’t like on it was the steering. It felt like it was floating like if you were driving on ice or driving over 160 mph and losing road traction from the front end lifting up. The dashboard cluster was a nightmare to figure out at first also. I was able to get on KLOS 95.5, which brought back some memories of when I lived in Surf City USA-Huntington Beach two decades ago.
The other thing I had to get use to is that everyone and I mean everyone, drives over 85 mph on surface streets and over 90 mph on the 405 freeway. At one point, I had cars passing me up and I looked down at my gauges and I was doing 91 but couldn’t tell.
I had a car doing between 110-120 mph pass me and the SUV in front of me and a white CHP car in the next lane over turned on his flashing lights to warn the driver of that car to slow down but didn’t pull him over.
One of the LAPD officers told me that CHP Officers take great risks to their lives pulling cars over for speeding because no one bothers to slow down at all. They rather take the speeding ticket than to be late getting to work or home because of the heavy traffic that can suddenly happen there. Crazy uh! 🙄

I am very happy with my 500de. Using a home made single band 2m coax antenna on a 25 foot pole I was talking past all thw houses around me to an island 10 miles away. Very much not line of sight. I was told your audio is amazing and you are 5 and 9 plus plus . The best you can be...

Love the video, hate the message. “Bend over, loyal Yaesu 500 owners.”

The idea of jacking the price up to $750 for this basic update is batshit insane. Yaesu makes good radios, but they’re getting really greedy with their pricing…

Big slap in the face to new FTM-500 owners

I'm thinking that this could have been done through firmware updates to the existing FTM-500s. As well, why not come out with a newer version of the FT857? Also how about 2 meter SSB? Or a tri-bander capable of 220 MHz?

It’s nice shiny pretty but in the end of the day, it’s a dual banded radio and not worth $800. I might pay that for an all mode Radio.

They missed a huge opportunity to include SSB in this radio, especially given they could have taken the design directly from the new upcoming QRP FTX-1F radio... A real shame!

great video jason as always .I have the ftm 500 and i mostly enjoy the radio .but the user interface for aprs is terrible .sending messages on aprs is not user friendly at all .The bluetooth module doesnt connect to a lot of earbuds and earphones right .The radio does not have memory banks . yaesu has its ears closed when it comes to there consumers . it is almost like the person who engineered this radio has never used a radio at all, or a cell phone ! no qwerty keyboard, just to reply to a aprs message is a pain. overall its like they get the radio 80% there and then stop .they could make it so much better with some functionality changes .dont get me wrong i use this radio everyday and enjoy it .but it could be a lot better easily .Now they discontinue the 500 and take away the bluetooth .and give us the asp function, and the super dx . the fact is i bet most people cant tell the difference between the 500 and the 510 and for almost two hundred dollars more !

You know what would make sense? A voltage monitor, like the ftm300 and 400. The lack of consistency on this for mobile radios really irks me

How much will that chip increase the price? I don't understand why there is such a big price increase between the 2980 and the 3185. It was nice having rigs below $200 for new hams. I found a 2900 a couple of years ago for $20 and jumped on it.

I have FINALLY completed my quest to acquire all 3 of the FT-897, FT-857, and FT-817. Why bring that up? These three radios fit me and my needs, Modernize These three and I would consider buying new, until then, I am done acquiring radios.

Any idea if they've added more sophisticated channel groups? I'd love to have a more advanced receiver with DSP (assuming it's as wonderful as they say), but my AnyTone 578's groups (zones) and multiple scan lists are still way ahead of anything by Yaesu, Icom or Kenwood.

I LOVE my FTM-400 and wouldn’t trade it for any of these.
