We tried enrolling everyone in school last year, and everyone had different experiences! Two decided to return to homeschooling mid-year, but one loved it so much that they are unlikely to ever return to homeschooling. I share their opinions and also reflect on my own experience as a mom/taxi driver. I hope this video is helpful to anyone contemplating switching back to school *or* back to homeschooling. Sorry about the slight blurriness of the video - I think I hit a random button on my camera that I shouldn't have hit.

Really great video. I appreciate your being transparent and real. There aren't many videos like this on youtube amongst homeschool families. This really resonated with me. Thank you!

My son did 5th Grade in PS and my daughter did a couple months in 2nd. They are both so much happier now that they know the grass isn’t greener 😂😂😂 I can’t say I haven’t used PS as a threat once or twice when they wouldn’t stop bickering lol

I have three kids, and two of them did public school for three years (k-2, 1-3). My kids have asd and/or adhd and they weren't thriving. According to them school was too stressful, and their behavior communicated that to me as well. It wasn't the academics that were hard on them, but I think the intensity of the social environment, the rigidity of the environment, and the sensory elements. I appreciate what you said about different people having different social needs. It's so true. They are currently happy to be homeschooling, but they do miss some elements of school like certain friends or the fun little parties... the constant influx of birthday cupcakes. 😂 I think it is good for them (and me) to see the decision to homeschool with clear eyes. There are some drawbacks, but overall I think it was a positive change for all of us.

Thank you for your reflections on this. My kiddo wanted to return to PS last year and it ended up being very hard on him. We are back to homeschooling and still trying to figure out the best way to approach learning for him. 😊 He’d rather be home though!

Im watching this video with tears in my eyes because after 5 years of homeschooling I think this MIGHT be our last. I being pulled to try out next year as a trail run and see how my oldest adjusts to it. He isn’t asking for it but I’m conflicted because I think he NEEDS it and I’m not giving him what he needs. Idk it’s been a rough time lately because even though we love homeschooling I think he will benefit from the school setting.

I'm hoping my oldest will be able to take a few classes at the high school next year - not a full load, just 2 or 3 classes. To prep for that we are making sure to get his IEP in place this year. We talked with the school system and February is generally a slow month for them for testing, so that's when we are having it done. That also gives everyone time to have it IN PLACE when school starts. I'm not 100% sure, but am fairly confident that the testing should then be valid through the entirety of High School. So, even if we don't end up doing classes next year, it will be ready when we are ready. I share all this just to say if anyone has a child who might need and IEP or 504, it might be helpful to get that in place early so they can START OUT with accommodations, rather than having to wait to get through the whole testing process.

I've been waiting for this video! Thanks for sharing your experience. We've been homeschooling from 2nd-5th grade and are considering trying private school for sometime in middle school. I know that can be a tough time with hormones and all the changes that are going on during those ages and think it's valuable for the child to feel confident in themselves before being thrown into that atmosphere. I'm looking forward to following along with your experiences in both homeschool and brick and mortar.

Just starting 6th grade with my kid and not at all sure how to incorporate deadlines. My (ADHD) son always wants me to manage what to do when. eh gotta figure it out!

It doesn’t sound like it from what you said here, but did the bullying incident your son experienced at all discourage him from wanting to be in a school setting?
