That's just factually incorrect, one does not need to be religious to understand moral and ethics.

If anything, religions forces us to obey its rules without questioning them, which leads to injustices (clear examples would be sexism or homophobia). There are philosophies such as humanism that encourage critical thinking and the affirmation of our ability and responsibility to lead ethical lives of personal fulfillment that aspire to the greater good, rather than blind obedience to a faith.
