to me this is a story about narcissism, and how it is impossible to be with someone long term, who can't see anyone else but himself. the only way for these personalities to become bearable to live with as partners, is for them to 'shift forms' - in this case to the gentle horse grazing in the cool meadow. Chhaya needed to get away from the intensity of endless blazing of Surya, just as many women married to narcissistic men eventually break away, out of sheer desperation for their own survival, and to find peace, - to live in a 'meadow' where their energy can be repaired and restored.
