Here is the valgus stress test for the knee on a patient who has an MCL tear and some instability of the medial capsule. I explain the following:
▶ Where the hand placement should be.
▶ Which direction to push.
▶ The differences in testing for a capsular tear and medial collateral ligament tear.

Great video! If you see this patient again, I have a request: Can you take a video of this same test with a camera angle oriented towards the medial joint line? I definitely appreciate the value you bring with this current video, but my students with a less developed eye may comprehend the special test a bit more with my suggestion. Also, thank you for providing great resources for my sports medicine students.

Is there a difference between doing it at 0 degrees and 30 degrees of knee flexion? This patient had positive valgus stress test in both scenarios - whats the significance?

Good morning… so this Valgus test, are you supposed to have that little bit of play when you go outwards with it??? I play soccer, and a couple of days ago in a game, I attempted to make a long pass by using the inside of my right foot, but an opposing player stuck his foot in there just in time to block my pass. It was a pretty forceful block. Had to walk off the field within a couple of minutes due to the discomfort. In like 30 minutes or so, I could already tell that it got swollen. I am able to bend my knee to like a 15-20 degree angle, but If I try to go further, I begin to feel like my knee wants to lock up from the inside. All of my pain is from the inside of my right knee. I can extend just fine. I haven’t tried to see if I can flex my quad muscle. Just trying to determine if it something serious or not 🥺😢🥺. I have been icing on and off. What do you think Doc???
