2023 Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV | A Diamond in the Rough

Mitsubishi’s tie up with Nissan is starting to pay dividends and it started with the introduction of the all-new Outlander last year. I even like it better than the Rogue from which it is based. And now with the return of the plug-in hybrid, the outlander is shining even brighter.

MSRP as-tested: $50.980

That’s why the Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV is the best selling- Plug In Hybrid in the World. We own 6 Mitsubishis and we love how reliable this are cars. ❤️

Here in Canada this is the cheapest and one of the longest range PHEV 3 row. The 3rd row isn’t as large as the competitors but the price delta is worth it. I see tons of these around town

Oh and I would love to see a more in depth look in the MiPilot Assist system, there is precious little actual video of the system being used in real life available on YT.

PHEV's are the way to go for now. According to Toyota 6 PHEVS can be made for each full EV assuming a 100 kw/hr. battery in the EV. More people get to save on gas.

I actually really like the new Outlander. I’ve seen a few on the road and they look way better than the Rogue.

However, it kind of sucks that you don’t get the federal incentive if you want to buy the PHEV version. I prefer to buy my vehicles over leasing. It really only makes financial sense to lease it.

Thanks for the review! -- I bought my 2023 Outlander PHEV (SEL Premium) 4 months ago - local dealer (Columbus, Ohio – USA) had 7 Outlander PHEVs on the lot. They now have 11 on the lot with great sales deals. I got mine for $1, 200 UNDER MSRP and the dealer gave me $31, 500 for my 2018 Acura TLX -- I paid $18, 000 plus tax for the Outlander. I have driven 4, 356 miles – have used 32 gallons of gas total.
I am plugging it in every night for my daily commute and weekend errands. I have taken 2 road trips of 300 miles round trip each; got 37 “mpg” using “Normal” hybrid mode for these trips. It feels "luxurious" inside -- premium leather, panoramic roof, 360 camera, power folding side mirrors, heated steering wheel, heated front AND rear seats, hands-free tailgate, head up display, Bose speakers AND massaging front seats! If I take a longer drive, I will have no "range anxiety."
Plus, the Outlander has a 10-YEAR WARRANTY. ONE BIG NOTE: the owner's manual clearly states that the 3rd row is ONLY for people under 5' 3." I do not need a 3rd row, so I "tri-fold" it. This opens up a HUGE, DEEP storage well. And, I can stack duffel bag items on the folded 3rd row!
The RAV4 Prime may have better overall mpg, but the 18-month wait and $12, 000 "dealer adjustment" are outrageous. One local dealer wanted $65k for loaded Prime with MSRP of $52k. I did not consider Kia or Hyundai brands -- "Kia boys" have stolen 3, 000 of them in my area (and assaulted drivers in the process). This is a real issue.
Lastly, my home solar panels were installed 2 months ago. I got a level 2 charger in my garage 3 weeks ago. The Outlander PHEV is the PERFECT choice for me in 2023 --- availability, luxury, value and price -- a great vehicle to "step into" electrification!

Observations so far...65-89 MPG with a mix of city/highway driving and regular charging. Battery drops off fast if driving on the highway so forces you to use "save" or "charge" mode. Seats and features super convenient. Plug is included which apparently is not in some other big name brands. Love the two AC outlets. Moonroof is amazing, but a bit slow to close. Third row seat can be flipped backward as a tailgate seat, but you can't remove the headrests. Driving wise it is great. Adaptive cruise works well. The tarmac mode feels best handling wise but really eats up MPG. The regen braking and one-pedal modes take some getting used to. My biggest wish: Remove the 3rd row seat and put in more storage or a spare tire. I leased for $50, 800 and received $7221 rebate.

steve is correct as i have a 2018 phev and once the juice runs out, the engine sound is horrible and so is the pickup

The leaf type charger is there for vehicle to load capability.if you set up the inverter you can get it to power your house

I assume you meant to say 16 hours and not 6 and a half to charge on the level 2 charger. 6 would be awful nice though :P

I understand the good points, but $50k?!?

Cons: 3rd Row, Hybrid MPG, CHAdeMO, gets expensive, cheap gear selector.

Great review of a great car. Emergency third row is perfect for my use case.

You are smart to make a habit of not critiquing styling, as it is so subjective. Unfortunately, I find this car so blindingly ugly that I’d really have to love the rest of it in order to drive it off a lot. To each their own…

BTW: Your use of the phrase “Renault alliance” gave me a very powerful flashback.

Its not really a Mitsu, its a Nissan that Mitsu put their own styling on.
