The bootstrap paradox is a classic time travel paradox and one which is used in many sci-fi films. Can a future event cause something to happen in the past? and what does this mean for your timeline? Let's discuss about Bootstrap Paradox and its solutions in today's video of DiscoverZen.

What do you think about Bootstrap Paradox?

I remember the scene where squidward goes back in primitive age and meet spongebob and patrick ancestors, he makes the game called jellyfish hunting he then came back to future and when he ask who created the game spongebob says that he was created it, can't believe i figure it out a years later

I learn more with these types of videos than I do at school

There are also several examples of bootstrap paradox in back to the future

-Chuck berry gettimg Johnny be good from Marty
-goldie Wilson getting the idea to run for mayor from Marty
-Marty giving his mom the idea for his name

Bro, keep it up. Keep this kind of videos coming. Make it more lengthy like 10 minutes and more. Love from India.

Thanks for this. I get so tired of trying to talk about space and time with people who just parrot things they have heard.

I cannot find a single person to tell me how Coop in Interstellar began a loop by having his future self interact with him. You cannot explain that without assuming we can travel backwards in time. Which is an assumption, but they just accept it.

"It's not supposed to make sense, it's a paradox" sounds like a lazy excuse for a lazy mind.

I feel like The Multiverse Theory was specifically made to solve all time travel paradoxes.

Like if I killed a certain Austrian Painter way back in 1925, WW2 would less likely to happen, but then the new me would have no reason to go back and kill that Austrian, so that Austrian would be alive and would've started WW2. It feels like an on and off thing like the Grandfather Paradox.

Loved the video, it really helped me understand this interesting topic a little more, but my mind still can't fully comprehend it, it's so confusing lmao

Watch the Netflix series Dark, it covers literally every paradox theory lol it’s crazy

To make a time machine that connects to the past, the openings have to have experienced different non-inertial reference frames, either by being accelerated relative to each other or being in different gravitational fields. This means that you can come out in the past, but only at a distance of at least 1 light year for every year you go back in time.

There is a solution to the time travel paradox.
Time travel to the past creates a new past in which the time traveller NEVER existed.

Let's suppose that your time machine is a spaceship.
Inside the spaceship time flows at normal speed forward at one second per second.
But when you travel back in time, time outside the spaceship flows backwards for example at 10 years per second.
Outside the ship all laws of physics are reversed. Instead of getting older, you get younger.
Instead of things falling down, things go up. Instead of walking forward, you walk backwards.
Everything happens like a movie being rewinded.

But the time traveller is inside the ship, not outside.
Inside the ship time still flows forwards at a speed of one second per second.
For the rest of universe, outside the ship, time flows backward, with people walking backwards.
Outside the ship there is no time traveller to walk backwards.
The rest of the universe which is flowing backwards in time CREATES A NEW TIMELINE, A NEW PAST WHERE THE TIME TRAVELLER NEVER EXISTED!

When the ship finally arrives back on Earth, the traveller discovers a new past, one in which he never existed. He is still able to find his parents, but they never gave birth to him.
He is able to find his children and grandchildren, but they all have a different father and grandfather.
He is still able to find his facebook page, with photos of himself, but they were created by a different person, with all the pictures digitally altered.

The only thing in common between this new timeline and the old timeline is the moment the time traveller departed.
That moment is the initial condition of the system. By applying the laws of physics, you can determine the final condition of the system some time in the future.
But by applying the same laws of physics IN REVERSE, you can find a PREVIOUS conditon of the system IN THE PAST.
No laws of physics are violated. No paradox is created.

The first ever time machine built will be a messaging device. Before it's a transportation device. Think about it. Why has no one realized this.

Time travel is a one way street.

You can only travel to the future, but you cannot travel to the past.

I don't see where there is a bootstrap paradox in the "theory of relativity case", since it's only information, and not a physical object, that is making the loop. Unlike the physical object, the information does not "age", like in the watch example.

This paradox can only be solved by specifying the person an object is given to. Why Einstein, why the person X? As time traveller knows why he picks that person, I see no paradox here. The person should mean something that time traveller of course knows about!

First, the multiverse is pure piffle so i won't bother with it.

The problem with this time loop paradox is that it fails for the same reasons that the "bouning universe" theory does (that the universe expanded, stopped, collapsed to expand again, ad infinitum), proposed by far too many physicists. In that, the universe supposedly existed infinitely back and is open ended in the here and now so the infinite line traverses backwards from here, the context in which we ponder it. Of course we cannot go back to the other end of this line because there isnt one so there can be no means of consideration in the forward direction, that by which it is supposed to have extended.

Consider...if we were to ignore that this line of iterations of the universe has no beginning end, to travel along its length toward the future, we would have never gotten here, ever. There is also no means by which this line of iterations of the universe could have been populated in the forward direciton. It would have to have been populated backwards, destroying the sequence of the theory, causing it to fail in this aspect as well.

This also applies to the time loop in the video, being the means by which it also fails. In the video the man would have to have been going back in time to leave himself the book eternally. The progression of existence would then become stuck in that loop. Time could not have moved forward. Additionally, there could be no book for it would have had no author, no research done to generate its content. That this loop defies the cause and effect nature of such progressions, it would have made the book's existence impossible. The book's existence would merely have been "suppposed". Given the above, i.e., that time would have been stuck in this loop would have defied all the laws of physics by which the time machine and its effects were governed, i.e., the snake eating its tail.

This is a ridiculous notion, rather sophomoric in fact. There is no such thing as infinity within the context of materiality. This is why pairing the concept with those of materiality never works and can produce only contradictions. Materiality or existence is governed by contraints in that all that can and does exist must by definition be finite, delieable and quantifiable, applicable to no aspects of infinity.
This is not a paradox because it is materially impossible. The book could not have existed were it not first authored which eliminates that which is the paradoxical function.

What do you think?

Albert took credit? Wow, he’s an ass in that timeline.

There is also another thought experiment, suppose you have a time machine, at 1 PM you stand next to it for 1 hour and then leave the room, you come back at 3 PM 1 hour after you left the room, then you use the time machine to travel back to 1 PM, what will you see? Well you will see yourself and the time machine but thats a totally diffrent you and a totally diffrent time machine a new time machine and thus matter has been created? becouse mass and energy are the same thing energy has been created? this violates the 1st law of thermodynamics very badly.
