In this episode, weʻre on the North Shore of Oʻahu witnessing the extreme erosion events that are threatening homes, roads, ocean access, ecosystems, and historic burial sites. We visit Rocky Point, Laniākea, and Mokulēiʻa—three areas with recent beach erosion—to learn about solutions going forward. We talk with coastal geologists, city planners, and community leaders.

Join us as we visit these areas and learn alongside Brad Romine from the University of Hawaiʻi Sea Grant College Program, Lauren Blickley from Surfrider Foundation, Alex Yee from the City and County of Honolulu’s Office of Climate Change, Sustainability, and Resiliency, and Kammie Tavares from the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa’s Coastal Geology Group.

Building anything close to the beach causes erosion, there has to be a natural buffer between the beach and any man made structure.

Have a look at Prince of Wales Drive, Port Botany, Australia, the sea wall protecting the Fluid Terminal built about 50 years ago hasn't moved. About 2 Klms long, links together like Lego, too big just can't move. This would be a big commitment however, would work. Each piece weights a few tons with not enough surface area for the sea to move it. There's thousands of tons of concrete all sliding together.

Everybody knows what is going to happen but nobody says it out loud. Wonder why it is so bad along the stretch between Rocky Point and Monster Mush?

Thank you.

None of these houses would be able to get insurance.

Check out The Gold Coast in Australia, they have solved coastal erosion, it's not easy but it can be done

It is such a shock to discover you cannot build on sand.

It’s sounds like Hawaii needs to invest in sand dredging ships that would operate full time. That whole stretch of beach could be replenished in one week if they just stopped making this more complicated than it actually is.

A structural piling 1:55 into a sand base is a risky proposition in the best of conditions. And given the political football match these poor homeowners find themselves in, Romine stated the tragic, inevitable fact - ultimately they're going to have to be pushed 'move' back. The winter swells will pulverize man made attempts to offset the relentless, chronic shoreline erosion, and as he says 'it never fully recovers'.
