It was punishment from Zeus for being the leader of the Titans during the war between the Titans and the Gods, which the Titans lost. Most of the other Titans were sealed away in the lowest part of the Underworld, yet since Zeus's mother and aunts, the Titanesses didn't take sides in the war they were not punished.
