SALT LAKE CITY (KUTV) — Governor Cox revealed his state budget plan on Thursday morning, which includes $20 million for nuclear power "site preparation" in Utah, and the elimination of state income taxes on Social Security payments to seniors.

The budget book—nearly 200 pages long—said the Social Security tax cut would be close to $145 million total and save seniors an average of roughly $1,000 a year. The governor said it is an "embarrassment" that Utah is still one of eleven states that tax those benefits.

But the nuclear power proposal—while relatively tiny in a $30.6 billion budget—may generate the most political electricity.

Thorium reactors are very safe and quite clean but thorium doesnt produce plutonium waste so the government doesnt want to invest

It's funny how these people are worried about nuclear power but not worried about nuclear weapons.

Where is Cox getting all this money? Oh yes, the backs of hard working taxpayers! Shouldn’t we be addressing things like Crime, mental health, and the homeless in Utah? Maybe get rid of Sim Gill, & replace with someone who wants to do their job, and bring forth real Justice to the victims of criminals? Pay our teachers more. Pay all first responders more! Do our part in Agriculture, and help our local farmers out! You know, just a few of our more pressing needs Utah may have. I know this stuff isn’t as flashy on his resume, but let’s get back to the basics and improve!

I am convinced that The Simpsons had a real effect on America's view of nuclear. We have dozens of mobile nuclear reactors in our Navy. Zero catastrophes.
