What's My Rock? — Episode 9

Geology professor, Dr. Abstract, interviews Austin about his rocks in this geology series on rock and mineral identification. In this episode we go deep...using x-ray powder diffraction to identify one of the stranger rocks we've seen.

0:00 Intro
2:10 Specimen #1
8:53 Specimen #2
11:47 Specimen #3
14:29 Wrap-up with Austin
19:20 X-ray powder diffraction: making the powder
21:32 X-ray powder diffraction: the analysis
26:23 Recap with Dylan

Is it a meteorite or meteorwrong? Is it gold or just shiny? Is it a fossil, a diamond, a gemstone? Dr. Abstract calmly and cheerfully sorts through it all!

The guests are not actors, but real people from Southern California who have independently contacted him for his geological expertise. In exchange for having their specimens analyzed and identified, they agree to be filmed for this YouTube Channel. If you live in Southern California (or plan to be in the area) and you would like to appear on What's My Rock, send us a message with a picture of your rock.

This is a Tectonic City production

Outro song, "Ain't No Meteorite" by Octopolis available on most streaming services: Spotify, Apple, Amazon, etc.

The humor and information juxtaposition is a master work of art. Hey, lick this rock; I learned to chop in grad school.

THANK you! I have seen those odd things before... weird and rare but I was in the Aleutian Islands so 100 volcanos everywhere, active.

15:51 how could a licking waiver not be done?! Every rock obsessed person licks. Not all finds. Like Tigers eye. Asbestos family. Im a firm believer in licking rocks. Builds up immunity.

Cool and informative video Dr. Abstract/Tectonic City, well done and cool toys. One thing I am not sure about though is how was that stuff used in concrete? You say additive, are those crystals to act as a stiffener?

Really glad you are putting out new content. I'd like to know how to get on the show. I rockhound San Diego beaches and have found some beautiful rocks that I can't identify. I've shown them to a couple of geologists from the San Diego Mineral & Gem Society, and they also don't know what they are. I could use some help. Thanks.
