Bunch ride of 8 riders.
All ran over a shallow trench.
6 high pressures, no drama

2 tubeless exploded with one destroying the wheel,
Not a good morning 😕 😪 😞

I can't wait for tireless tubeless technology!

To me the main drawback of hookless rims is it restricts tire choices and locks you into the more expensive tubeless tires. No thanks.

But...but...but...Magic! And profits! The physics and logic change when you're selling magic. Of course tubeless rims take the impact, and are damaged. Where else, *especially with lower pressure* could the energy from impact be dissipated? Oh silly me, I forgot about the magic of marketing. And gullible fools with too much money...

I have never had a pinch flat with 28mm clinchers. That underlines the fact that you don't need to go to hook less if running 28mm. Are we just getting sold something else because it is cheaper to manufacture and will increase the brands profit margin ? Mmmmm, let me think....😁

Not sure what I'm doing wrong, but I've never had a problem with pinch flats. I bought an old road bike with 25mm tires on it a few years ago, and pinched about 20 miles in to my first ride when I hit a ditch. Since then I've had 3 or 4 flats in about 2, 500 miles, and one of those was because I wore through my tire until it exploded. I'm about 190-200 lbs, running 90-95 psi in 25mm tubed tires.

What I find amazing is that road cyclists are so slow to adapt to new innovations, it's always been the way. Mountain bikers have been using tubeless wheels for years and yet road cyclists, who put the less stress on the tyre, can't make it work. Put your big boy/girl trousers on and man up.

Hookless seems more dangerous when things go wrong. Not safe on rougher terrain/road surfaces, smooth roads only. Clincher style rims tubed or tubeless will be around due to that reason from the tire having a hard time moving around in the rim anyways. Easy to set up, fix flats, and replace tires. Road tubeless use still needs work to get right due to higher pressure in smaller area. Tubeless for wider tires works most of the time. Tubeless road = tubular road in idea but not in functionality. Tubulars good for racing with support available close by mainly unless you have batch at home and know to fix the tubular when the tred/ground contact parts are still in good.

I think the only problem with hookless rims is the limit on tire pressure you can ride on. I weigh 90kg which means I'd have to probably use at least a 30mm rear tire. I probably can get away with a 28mm front tire. I don't want to use anything wider than a 28mm tire. A 30mm tire is going to be slower on any decent road surface. Tubulars are not a feasible option for me.

I believe the main reason that hookless rims are being pushed by the manufacturers is because they are more profitable to make.

Hooked rims are more labour intensive as they are a 3 piece mold. Hookless rims are a 2 piece mold therefore incur less labour costs.

Its sad that because its cheaper to make that it must be better for you.

My experience, I love tubeless, I didn't have a pinch flat since I switched, I avoid hookless rims. When I used tubes I ride to higher pressure to avoid pinch flats, now I run lower.
Since I switched I never stopped because of a flat. Around 30000KM on tubeless :) Not even needed to put a plug. What I do is check the wheel on returning home and check for any big cut and patch it from inside, just as reinforcement for the sealant.

That's a bit concerning, I have the zipp 303s on my gravel bike and yesterday got my first flat.

I didn't notice the flat but heard the rim thud on a rock and kept riding a minute later the rim hit even harder, I looked down and I had no pressure! I'm going to inspect my rim now

Tubes and 28mm Conti 5k on Bora WTO hooked. Run tubeless on MTB but road and roadside just more comfortable with a spare tube or patch. Hoping a plug will seal a glass cut on tubless may be questionable. I can handle most anything with a tubed tire for roadside repair. The Tubeless if you cannot plug effectively may be a mess due to the goo and if you try to seal, once, twice, etc before resorting to a tube... Do you have enough air? I carry a couple of 16g cartridges. If I waste them, I'm still broken down. So I simply ride what I always have and has always been reliable.

I run 25mm GP5000s TRs on hooked rims. Max pressure hooked is 30 psi higher than hookless. Hooked presents a lot more options for pressures. I weigh 165 lbs and run 80 psi in the front and 85 psi in the rear. And I have experienced what would have been a pinch flat on this setup when I ran over a rock with my rear tire at speed. It was a good whack, but it burped a tiny bit of air and sealant and that was it. Hooked seem to offer all the benefits of tubeless without negatives of hookless, like the one you describe here.

The weight and pressure is part of the choice but more studies need to be done

I have been running Continental 5000 TL 28C tires on Token Konax Pro wheels with good results. It seems to be a good combination.

I've never had a pinch flat after a year of tubeless cross and gravel riding with some hard hits. I have rolled / dislodged a tubeless bead cornering hard with low tire pressure tho

Concerned about the low maximum running pressure for bigger rider's/90kg plus. I'm running GP5000"s and running 80/85 and that's near the top end for tubeless

The industry keeps trying to pass manufacturing hacks off as performance enhancements; hookless, dropped seat stays, press fit BB.
