Tracking Your Child's Location: Cellular GPS Tracker Vs Apple AirTag

Today we’re talking about GPS trackers. Specifically the GeoZilla GPS Tracker, which I’ll review for you.

Now why are we talking about GPS trackers anyway? Well as you know they’ve become pretty popular these days. Particularly bluetooth trackers.

Apple Airtags have made bluetooth trackers insanely popular. I’ve got a few of those too. There’s millions of AirTags floating around and people are using them to track everything from their keys, to their bags, to their children.

But speaking of tracking children, you’re not technically supposed to track people with these bluetooth trackers.

That’s where Cellular connected GPS devices come in handy. They have their own connection to the cellular network, and therefore are theoretically more reliable.

So the question is, how well does it work?

At this point there just are no perfect solutions. Our special needs guy has a GPS tracker similar to Anglesense called Seculife. It works well for our needs. None of them are truly "live" in that there are delays, especially when moving quickly (like in a vehicle) or when there are network issues (like you noted). We also add an airtag as a backup, in case the other one isn't working or is removed. The nice thing about airtags is that they are very small and have a much longer battery life. That said, if you've ever tracked a lost airtag, (I have, but not the one attached to a kid 🙂) it's not easy - it only gives a general area until/unless you can get close enough to turn on the "find nearby" feature. It also doesn't do well with multiple floors. All that said, I'm so glad these types of tools are available and hope they continue to improve. Our guy is a stealth runner/eloper who has gotten away from teachers and us, even as we were watching... because kids have an ability to get under and around objects and other humans quicker than adults can. Luckily, we were able to get to him before he was truly at risk, but it's very scary and if he got so far that we didn't know which direction to go, these tools would be invaluable.

The apple air tag definitely did NOT work at Disneyland in July my son’s back pack was split up from the group for a few moments and the air tag could not locate it at all.

You say that when we were kids no one had these trackers. That is true but child abduction/disappearances have increased significantly and the discussing support of psychotic pedos (MAPs) is concerning to parents who actually care for their kids (I know it’s hard to believe some parents want to pay attention to their kids). Also in cities like Denver for example have had a massive increase in population unlike when adults like us were kids.

You can get your kid a non-smartphone to track their location. I'm not talking about flip phones, i'm talking about phones that look like smartphones, but they are limited on what the kid can do on it. Yes, there are cell phones that don't have visible App Store apps that your kid can use to download apps. These phones can only call, text, and send picture messages, but they can't use the internet, download apps, or play games. The kids can only use the apps that are on their phone. You can buy a smartphone for your kids that can grow with them, you can start with just basic things like calculator, clock, call and text, and then go along. All of these phones have GPS tracking, so you can locate them on the map, and manage who can call or text your kids. It would be a cell phone with kids want, with some peace of mind features for parents. Maybe these phones would be best if it's your kid's first cell phone, and you want to start them off with a basic phone.

Does that mean that the Airtag only works within specific distances and is not effective if I want to track my children if they go on a school trip?

If a bully steals the watch....you can track it...then teach your kid to stand up for himself. The watch allows you to receive text and calls with tracking without giving the kids a soul sucking smartphone. No brainer SMH

The apple air tag is awful for tracking if your trying to monitor your child coming home from school on the bus. I bought my grandson a prepaid iPhone and track his location that way and it works perfectly as it is live. The apple air tag is the worst product made my apple and I am an apple fan!
