Why the Rolling Stones are the greatest rock band ever

Founded in 1962 the Rolling Stones are one of the most famous rock groups in the world.
Leading the British Invasion of bands that became popular in the US in the 60s, The Rolling Stones are stage legends embodying the "sex, drugs and rock 'n' roll" lifestyle.

Especially during the late 1960s, no other band came to embody the image of the hedonistic rock band more than the Stones. Groupies and heavy drug use were par for the course.

Even today, they keep on rolling: The Stones are still touring, 60 years after the band played their first-ever gig, at London's Marquee Club on July 12, 1962. The idea of a farewell tour popped up a few times, but they kept on rocking. Despite their age, they never failed to put on spectacular shows.

This Arts Unveiled episode dives into the Stones' Cosmos and digs deeper into how the Rolling Stones became so legendary. We have spoken to fans, music journalist Ernst Hofacker and documentary filmmaker Clare Tavernor and dug up some interviews from our archive to understand what makes the Stones timeless legends.

The Stones, hands down, hands that held the drum sticks, that played open tuning guitar; and voice that strutted the essence of wondrous rock and roll.

I saw the Stones and the Beatles on The Ed Sullivan Show in 64. I always liked them. However 🤔 when I started to play their music on guitar thats when I recognized the genius of Keith and his guitar work. I was there to see it ALL!...The Stones...The Greatest Rock and Roll Band...Ever!❤😉👍🏻

Not arguably. The Rolling Stones are the best rock n roll band in the world. What other groups have achieved this kind of accomplishment? Have a hit album in all six decades? They outlasts all of them. The Beatles, Led Zeppelin, Guns N’ Roses, Queen were good rock groups, but they all short lived. They are the GOAT.

The Stones deserve title greatest rock n roll band of the last 60 yrs. The Who are greatest live band the last 60 yrs. The Beatles band of the 60's, most successful and influential. Zep band of the 70's. Stones greatest concert draw.

Inteiewer: ---What were you doing before you joined? ( the band)
Brian--- *"Well just sort of bumming around, waiting for something to happen, really*
*I had quite a few jobs and I was trying to get a band going, but it was unsuccessful until I met up with Mick and Keith and then ...well THAT was a successful band."*
Brian seems to indicate here that he felt that Mick and Keith had a successful band when he "met up" with them. That would explain why he wanted to join them. The line up on stage at the Marquee indicates that he did join them because he and ian were there and the band he "met up with", remained intact.

The Beatles may have been a fairly good live band, but they threw a strop somewhere around 1965 because the screaming was too loud, and they couldn’t hear themselves properly.

The Stones would have just bought bigger amps. Let’s face it, from the footage available, it’s clear that The Beatles weren’t anywhere near the Stones league as a live band. The Stones were, probably even still, the greatest live act in rock n’ roll.

Find Let it Bleed is thousands times better than Let it Be. Keep crying, Lennon boy fans.

Harrison was an awful guitarist. Beatles couldn't play their instruments at all. Ponces. 😂

They really broke up in the 80's and came back. They weren't together the whole 60 years and some have died.

Why do Rolling Stones fans have to lie about the Beatles in order to validate their favorite band? The Beatles were never clean cut. When they came to the US critics complained about the length of their hair. Later they wrote a song with the lyrics, "you better run for your life if you can little girl, hide your head in the sand little girl, catch you with another man that's the end little girl." As for 'dirty' sounding songs, I guess you never heard of the White album that is chock-full of them. Revolution 1, Helter Skelter, and Everybody's Got something to hide except for me and my monkey. Please stop pretending that the Stones didn't copy the Beatles on every album. It's pathetic
