Russia's Putin announces military operation in Ukraine

Russian President Vladimir Putin has announced a military operation in Ukraine, claiming it's intended to protect civilians. He warned other countries that any attempt to interfere would lead to "consequences they have never seen."

I live near Kyiv and this morning was horrible. The sound of an explosion waked me up at 6 am, after that I had heard my mother's voice: "Wake up. The war has already begun.."

My city was bombshelled this morning. Russia should not be able to sell its gas anywhere today to sponsor its war

It's about Putin stopping what he sees as Western expansion and creating a buffer state between Russian and NATO. There is precedent for this. Will Putin go after the Baltic states next? That would be a very different and a much more worrying scenario.
